1 · Why this matters
Speculative If a photo-induced radical pair inside a protein in a bird’s retina really does convert the direction of a 50 microtesla field into a neural signal — and no experiment has yet shown that in a living bird — then a warm, wet protein is doing, at body temperature, the kind of vector magnetometry a laboratory does with a shielded room and a lock-in amplifier. The condition comes first here because it is not met, and section 7 says exactly what would meet it.
Frontier The magnitude is best stated as the gap between the field the protein has been shown to respond to and the field a bird actually navigates in, because that gap is the whole molecular case. The magnetic field effects measured on avian cryptochrome 4a in vitro are reported at 30 millitesla, with a half-saturating field B1/2 of about 4 millitesla. The geomagnetic field is 25 to 65 microtesla, close to 50 microtesla at the European latitudes where the behavioural work is done. The demonstrated molecular sensitivity is therefore about eighty times coarser than the working field, and every serious proposal in this subject is a proposal for closing that factor of eighty.
Established One part of the prize has already been banked, and it is the part the field talks about least. Hydrogen tunnelling in enzyme catalysis is measured, replicated and quantitative: a double mutant of soybean lipoxygenase gives an average kinetic isotope effect of 661 ± 27, nearly temperature-independent across six temperatures, against a semiclassical ceiling near 7 for a primary carbon–hydrogen isotope effect at room temperature. A number two orders of magnitude outside the classical envelope is not a curiosity; it is a constraint on every rate model anyone writes for that class of enzyme.
Handwave The upside here is narrower than the field’s own rhetoric, and the distribution is lopsided. A 2026 review in a clinical translation journal offers quantum coherence biomarkers for cancer and ageing on the strength of photosynthetic coherence claims that a December 2025 review in the same literature has retired. Nothing in sections 3 to 5 of this brief supports a clinical product, and this page does not pretend otherwise. The people who collect are spin-chemistry and ultrafast-spectroscopy groups, a small conservation-biology constituency that would inherit a reason to regulate radiofrequency noise, and enzymologists who already have their result. The condition on all of it: a quantum resource has to survive in the tissue, do work there, and be measurable in situ — and section 5 is about the fact that the third of those is currently impossible.
2 · Concept overview
Quantum biology asks a question that is easy to state badly. All of chemistry is quantum mechanical, so “are there quantum effects in biology” is trivially yes and says nothing. The question that has content is narrower: does some biological function depend on a quantum resource — coherence, spin correlation, entanglement, or tunnelling beyond the semiclassical envelope — in a way that a classical model of the same system cannot reproduce? Everything in this brief is sorted by that test.
Established A May 2026 evidence map of the whole field sorts the candidate cases into three confidence tiers, and the ordering is not the one the popular literature uses. Its mature cases are enzymatic hydrogen tunnelling and radical-pair spin chemistry for magnetoreception. Its intermediate cases are photosynthetic vibronic dynamics, DNA charge transport in lesion signalling, photolyase repair photochemistry and respiratory electron transfer. Its speculative tier is microtubule quantum roles, ferritin biomagnetic signalling, Posner-cluster neural coherence and quantum formalisms in the genetic code. Frontier Photosynthesis, the case that made the field famous, sits in the middle tier — not the top.
Established Two mechanisms carry almost all the weight. The first is tunnelling: a proton or a hydrogen atom passes through a barrier it has insufficient energy to cross, which shows up as a kinetic isotope effect far larger than mass-difference arithmetic allows and as a rate whose temperature dependence is wrong for barrier crossing. The second is the radical-pair mechanism: light generates two radicals with correlated electron spins in a singlet state, the pair oscillates between singlet and triplet at a rate that depends on the local magnetic field including the Earth’s, and the two spin states have different chemical fates, so a weak field changes a reaction yield. Speculative Only the second is a candidate sense; the first is a candidate mechanism inside a process biology has for other reasons.
Frontier The framing this page tests is that quantum biology has been shrinking and improving at the same time, and it survives. The 2007-era claim — long-lived electronic coherence in a light-harvesting protein, functionally exploited to route energy — has been reinterpreted as vibrational and is no longer the field’s anchor. Established The anchor is now a bird compass and an enzyme rate. Speculative That is a better position to be in than the one the field occupied in 2010, and almost none of the public-facing literature has noticed.
3 · Current scientific position
Established Start with the result that was the field’s headline and is no longer: long-lived quantum coherence in the Fenna–Matthews–Olson complex. Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy of this small bacterial light-harvesting protein reported oscillating cross-peaks persisting for hundreds of femtoseconds at 77 K in 2007, and the interpretation offered was coherent excitonic transport — the excitation sampling several pigment sites at once and finding the efficient route. Established That interpretation did not survive contact with better measurements. A 2017 optical two-dimensional photon-echo study of the same complex at ambient temperature in aqueous solution found an electronic coherence lifetime of about 60 femtoseconds and no evidence of long-lived electronic coherence at all, against earlier reports of 1.5 picoseconds.
Established A review published in December 2025 states the current position without hedging, and it is the single most important sentence in this brief. Rigorous analysis of temperature-dependent two-dimensional spectra shows that the long-lived coherent oscillations previously ascribed to coherent exciton states are instead vibrational oscillations in the electronic ground state. The measured electronic dephasing lifetimes are 140 to 180 femtoseconds at 77 K and shorter still at 300 K. Established The review’s conclusion is that electronic coherence is too fragile to enhance energy transfer in photosynthetic protein complexes under physiological conditions, and that nature appears instead to use strong system–bath coupling to get robust transport by ordinary means. Frontier This is a reinterpretation, not a retraction: the oscillations are real and reproducible; what changed is what they are oscillations of.
Frontier The dispute is not over, and this brief could not read the strongest recent paper on the other side. A 2026 report in Science Advances claims that full microscopic simulations uncover persistent quantum effects in primary photosynthesis; the publisher returned a 403 to every attempt to fetch it, so it is cited here by name and no number from it appears on this page. Speculative The live version of the disagreement is about vibronic mixing — whether resonance between a vibrational mode and an excitonic energy gap does functional work, or whether it is a spectroscopic signature of a system that would transport energy equally well without it. Nobody has reported a measurement in which a change in transport efficiency tracks a deliberate change in vibronic resonance, which is why section 7 asks for one.
Established The magnetoreception case is stronger than the photosynthesis case, and it starts with behaviour rather than chemistry. Night-migratory songbirds orient by the inclination of the geomagnetic field, and that orientation is disrupted by weak radiofrequency magnetic fields — the signature of a spin-based rather than a magnetite-based receptor, because only a radical pair has energy levels that a nanotesla-scale oscillating field can drive. Established Broadband 75–85 MHz fields prevent a night-migratory songbird from using its magnetic compass in Emlen-funnel experiments. The frequency matters: it is above the estimated sensitivity cut-offs of about 120 MHz for the flavin radical and about 100 MHz for the tryptophan radical cation, so disruption in that band implies the sensing radical pair contains a substantial number of strong hyperfine interactions — consistent with a flavin–tryptophan pair and inconsistent with a pair of radicals with few nuclear spins.
Frontier The behavioural evidence also contains the field’s sharpest unresolved problem, and it is usually left out of summaries. Across the published radiofrequency experiments the reported disruption thresholds are extraordinarily low: a 7 MHz field at 470 nT, a broadband 0.1–10 MHz field at 85 nT, and a Larmor-frequency field at 15 nT disorienting robins while the same 15 nT field at half and twice the Larmor frequency did not. Frontier A 2016 analysis by four of the field’s own leading figures concluded that the standard radical-pair model is unable to explain any of the reported effects without spin-coherence lifetimes far longer than any measured radical pair sustains. Speculative The behavioural result that most supports the mechanism is also the result the mechanism cannot yet account for.
Established The molecular anchor this brief was commissioned against is the 2021 demonstration that cryptochrome 4 from the night-migratory European robin is magnetically sensitive in vitro, and more so than cryptochrome 4 from two non-migratory species, chicken and pigeon. That is what the paper says, and the paper is real. Frontier Three things about it have changed since, and one of them inverts the comparison.
Established First, the protein has a name the anchor does not use, and the distinction now matters. Birds express two isoforms from the same locus, Cry4a and Cry4b. A 2025 study found that robin Cry4b does not bind the flavin cofactor at all — the purified protein is colourless where Cry4a is yellow, and the 450 nm absorption signature of bound FAD is absent — that its FAD binding energy is less favourable by 39 kcal/mol in simulation, that its transcript is about ten times less abundant than Cry4a’s, and that a Cry4b-specific peptide present in recombinant protein is entirely absent from robin retinal immunoprecipitates. Established Cry4a, not cryptochrome 4 generally, is the candidate; the sister isoform is eliminated.
Frontier Second, and this is the correction the commission’s anchor needs: the migratory-versus-non-migratory contrast did not survive its own follow-up. A 2025 spectroscopic study of chicken Cry4a — from the same collaboration that produced the robin result — found magnetic field effects in the non-migratory protein too: a magnetic field effect of about −4 µOD at 30 mT in wild-type chicken Cry4a, a half-saturating field B1/2 of about 4 mT, and electron paramagnetic resonance confirming that wild-type chicken Cry4a uses the full tryptophan tetrad exactly as the robin protein does. A W369F mutant that truncates the tryptophan chain quadrupled the effect to about −16 µOD and lengthened the radical-pair lifetime from 60 ± 4.9 ns to 299 ± 15 ns — the same result the robin protein gives. Established The authors’ conclusion is explicit: any difference between robin and chicken Cry4a, and more generally between Cry4a proteins of migratory and non-migratory birds, must lie in their magnetic signalling rather than their sensing properties. Frontier The anchor as commissioned is a 2021 sentence that the 2025 work reassigns; what distinguishes the migrant is not the spin chemistry.
Frontier Third, and least discussed: the fields at which any of this was measured are nowhere near the field a bird uses. The in vitro magnetic field effects are reported at 30 mT with B1/2 near 4 mT. The geomagnetic field is about 50 µT. Speculative No purified cryptochrome has been shown to produce a reaction-yield change in a 50 µT field, and the honest statement of the molecular evidence is that the mechanism is demonstrated in the protein at fields roughly six hundred times too large.
Frontier Two 2021 and 2025 results do real work to close the remaining structural requirements. A compass needs the receptor to be ordered in the cell, because an isotropic suspension of randomly oriented proteins has no direction to report. Polarisation-modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy of robin Cry4a on fluid lipid bilayers gives an order parameter of 0.51 ± 0.12, with molecular dynamics returning 0.60 ± 0.05 — and a value near 0.5 is, on the published modelling, sufficient. Speculative Separately, a spin-dynamics treatment in which the flavin–tryptophan pair exists in rapid equilibrium between two successive radical pairs — one tuned for sensing, one for signalling — produces useful anisotropic yield changes at a simulated geomagnetic field of 50 µT. These are a measurement of orientation and a calculation of sensitivity; neither is a measurement of sensitivity.
Established The strongest case in quantum biology is not a sense at all, and it is old. Hydrogen tunnelling in enzymatic hydrogen transfer is established on kinetics that classical barrier crossing cannot produce. Soybean lipoxygenase is the canonical system, and the sharpest result comes from a double mutant with an average kinetic isotope effect of 661 ± 27 across six temperatures, nearly temperature-independent, with elevated pressure producing greater resistance to perturbation of global protein motions than in wild type. Established A semiclassical primary carbon–hydrogen isotope effect at room temperature has a ceiling near 7. Frontier What remains contested is not whether tunnelling happens but whether it is what enzymes are for — whether protein dynamics are tuned to promote it, or whether tunnelling is an unavoidable feature of a barrier that electrostatic preorganisation has already lowered.
Speculative The rest of the field is weaker, and the weakness is specific in each case. The vibrational theory of olfaction — that receptors read a ligand’s vibrational spectrum by inelastic electron tunnelling — has evidence that remains largely theoretical, and the isotope experiments offered in its support are confounded because isotopic substitution also alters non-covalent interaction energies, so a behavioural difference is not diagnostic of tunnelling. Speculative DNA charge transport in lesion signalling and photolyase repair photochemistry sit in the intermediate tier: the chemistry is quantum, the physiological role is inferred. Handwave Posner-cluster nuclear-spin coherence in neurons, ferritin biomagnetic signalling and quantum formalisms in the genetic code have no measurement behind them at all, and are treated on this page as labelled conjecture.
Frontier One neuroscience result is worth stating precisely because it is so often overstated. Rats pretreated with the microtubule stabiliser epothilone B took an average of 69 seconds longer to lose the righting reflex under 4% isoflurane, with n = 8, Cohen’s d = 1.9 and p = 0.0016. Speculative That is a real, sizeable effect on an anaesthetic endpoint and it is evidence that microtubules are an anaesthetic target. Handwave It is not evidence about quantum states in microtubules, because a drug that stabilises a polymer will change how a lipophilic anaesthetic partitions into and perturbs that polymer whether or not anything in it is coherent. Orch OR owns that argument and this page does not re-run it.
4 · Frontier questions
Frontier The open questions in this subject are unusually well posed, which is the main reason it belongs in a research corpus rather than a popular-science shelf. Six of them carry the field.
Frontier First: is there a magnetically sensitive radical pair in a living bird retina at all? Every molecular result in section 3 is on purified protein, in a cuvette, at fields between about 1 and 30 mT. Speculative The in vivo chain — light reaches the retina, Cry4a is photoreduced, a spin-correlated radical pair forms with a lifetime in the right window, the yield changes with field direction, a downstream partner reads the yield, a ganglion cell fires differently — has not been demonstrated at a single link. The behavioural evidence says something spin-dependent is happening; the molecular evidence says this protein could in principle do it; nothing joins them.
Frontier Second, and newly sharpened by the 2025 chicken result: what is the signalling partner? If robin and chicken Cry4a sense identically and differ in signalling, then the object that distinguishes a migrant is a protein–protein interaction nobody has identified. Speculative Candidate partners have been proposed on structural grounds; none has been shown to bind Cry4a in a retina, let alone to transduce a yield change. This reframes the field’s central question from spin physics to cell biology, and the field is not staffed for that.
Frontier Third: the coherence-lifetime problem in the radiofrequency data. Disruption at 15 nT at the Larmor frequency, with no disruption at half and twice that frequency at the same intensity, is the most mechanism-specific behavioural result in the literature and the one the standard model cannot reproduce. Speculative The proposed escapes are a radical pair with one nearly spin-free partner, coherence lifetimes into the microsecond range, or a scavenging reaction that amplifies small yield differences. Handwave Each escape is a free parameter, and adding free parameters to match a behavioural result is how a mechanism turns into a fit.
Frontier Fourth: does vibronic mixing in light harvesting do anything, or is it spectroscopy? The December 2025 review’s position is that electronic coherence is too fragile to help under physiological conditions and that transport is robust for classical reasons. Frontier The counterposition, defended in 2026 simulation work this brief could not retrieve, is that full microscopic treatment recovers persistent quantum effects that reduced models throw away. Speculative The disagreement is currently between a measurement and a calculation, which is a bad shape for an argument and an easy one to fix: section 7 names the experiment.
Speculative Fifth: is there any biological quantum advantage, as opposed to quantum description? Nothing in the established tier requires the word advantage. Tunnelling in an enzyme changes the rate; it does not make the enzyme do something a faster classical enzyme could not. Speculative The radical-pair compass is the one candidate where the quantum resource is load-bearing — a classical magnetometer of that sensitivity at that size and temperature is not obviously constructible — and that is precisely the case still missing its in vivo demonstration. Handwave The field’s strongest conceptual claim and its weakest evidence are the same claim.
Speculative Sixth: nuclear spins. Electron-spin chemistry in biology is respectable; nuclear-spin chemistry is not yet. The proposal that phosphorus-31 nuclear spins in calcium phosphate clusters could hold coherence long enough to matter in neural tissue generates specific predictions — an isotope crossover between xenon-129, with nuclear spin one half, and spin-zero xenon-132; isotopically substituted ligands; magnetic-field dependence of receptor signalling. Handwave One published anaesthesia test found no isotope dependence. Speculative A 2026 review restates the hypothesis in a narrower form — transient correlated microevents rather than persistent coherence — which is a retreat, and whether it is a legitimate one is the same question objective collapse models face in Objective Collapse Models.
5 · Technological bottlenecks
Frontier The bottlenecks in this subject are instrument and organism bottlenecks, not theory bottlenecks, and the biggest one is embarrassingly simple.
Frontier Nobody can measure a magnetic field effect on a protein at 50 microtesla. The published effects on cryptochrome are a few microOD of absorbance change at 30 mT, detected by broadband cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy. Speculative Scaling to the geomagnetic field means recovering a signal that is smaller by something like the square of the field ratio in the low-field regime, against the same photodegradation and the same protein yields. This is the single measurement that would convert the molecular case from plausible to demonstrated, and no group has reported an apparatus capable of it.
Speculative There is no germline-editable migratory songbird. Transgenesis and CRISPR protocols exist for a small number of laboratory birds, none of which is a night migrant, and the European robin is a wild-caught animal with no breeding line, a long generation time and no established primordial germ cell culture. Handwave The experiment the commission for this brief named as decisive is blocked not by cost or by ideas but by the absence of an animal model. Genetic Engineering and De-Extinction Technologies carry the avian germline methods that would have to mature first.
Frontier Ultrafast spectroscopy still measures ensembles. The entire coherent-versus-vibrational dispute in photosynthesis turns on separating signals that overlap in an ensemble average: vibrational motion, static disorder and ensemble dephasing can mimic electronic-coherence signatures. Speculative Single-complex two-dimensional spectroscopy at physiological temperature would dissolve the ambiguity by removing the average. It does not exist, because the photon budget of one protein complex before it photobleaches is orders of magnitude below what a two-dimensional scan needs.
Frontier In situ readout of spin chemistry is the generic bottleneck behind three of the six frontier questions. Nitrogen-vacancy magnetometry is the proposed route for detecting nanoscale magnetic transients in tissue, and it appears in the experimental programme of every speculative neuro-quantum proposal in this brief. Speculative The sensitivity, standoff distance and biocompatibility requirements for a measurement inside a functioning retina or synapse are not met; Precision Quantum Sensing tracks how far the hardware is from them. Every proposal in the speculative tier is waiting on the same instrument, which is a useful thing to notice about a field that presents itself as many independent programmes.
Speculative Protein supply is an unglamorous constraint that shapes what gets measured. Avian cryptochrome 4a expresses poorly, photodegrades under the illumination the experiments need, and is studied by a handful of groups. Handwave The reason the comparative-species result rested on three birds rather than thirty is a purification yield, not a hypothesis.
6 · Research dependencies
Frontier This subject depends on other people’s results more than it produces its own, and the dependencies are worth naming in order of how badly they bind.
Frontier Spin chemistry outside biology sets the ceiling. Every quantitative statement about the compass rests on radical-pair theory developed for photochemistry in solution: hyperfine couplings, singlet–triplet mixing rates, spin relaxation in disordered environments. Speculative The specific gap is spin relaxation in a protein at 300 K, which is the parameter that decides whether a microsecond coherence lifetime is thinkable, and it is measured in model systems rather than in cryptochrome.
Speculative Structural biology owes this field a complex, not a protein. Cry4a structures exist; the structure that matters is Cry4a bound to whatever reads its signal, and that depends on the interaction partner being identified first. Handwave A dependency that cannot start until an unsolved question is answered is not a schedule, and this brief does not give it one.
Frontier Behavioural ecology supplies the only in vivo assay there is, and it is slow. Emlen-funnel orientation experiments run on wild-caught birds during migratory restlessness, in seasons, in magnetically clean sites, with sample sizes of tens. Speculative The statistical power available in a season bounds how fine a manipulation can be tested, which is why the radiofrequency literature is a series of yes/no disorientation results rather than a dose–response curve.
Speculative Two dependencies run the other way, and they are the field’s best argument for funding. Spin-selective chemistry in biology is where Precision Quantum Sensing would find its most demanding application, and enzymatic tunnelling constrains the rate models used in Generative Biomolecular Design whenever a designed enzyme moves a hydrogen. Handwave Both are real couplings and neither is currently a funding argument anyone makes.
7 · Required experiments
Frontier Every position in section 4 has a stated test, and they rank by what a result would settle rather than by how easy they are to run.
Speculative Tier one, and the decisive experiment for this brief: a loss-of-function manipulation of Cry4a in a night-migratory songbird, read out by Emlen-funnel orientation, with radiofrequency disruption as the positive control. A knockout or a point mutant that abolishes flavin binding should abolish the magnetic compass while leaving star and sun compasses intact; a bird whose compass is already abolished should be insensitive to the 75–85 MHz field that disorients controls. Handwave No laboratory has a germline-editable night migrant, so this experiment has no schedule, no budget and no animal. Speculative The tractable substitutes are retinal knockdown by antisense or viral delivery in a migrant, which tests the same causal claim with a weaker manipulation, and the natural experiment of passerine lineages that have lost Cry4 altogether, which tests it with no manipulation at all and no control over anything else.
Frontier Tier two is the measurement that would change the molecular case most and needs no new biology: a magnetic field effect on purified Cry4a at 50 microtesla. Everything published is at 30 mT with a half-saturating field near 4 mT. Speculative A reaction-yield change at the geomagnetic field, with the predicted angular dependence, would make cryptochrome the first molecule shown to do what the compass requires. A null at achievable sensitivity would be almost as informative, because it would put a number on how much amplification the cell has to supply.
Speculative Tier three is the cell-biology experiment the 2025 chicken result created. Identify the protein that binds Cry4a in a retina and show that the binding differs between a migrant and a non-migrant. Speculative If sensing is identical across species and signalling is not, this is where the phenotype lives, and it is an interactomics problem rather than a physics problem. It is also the only tier on this list that a well-equipped molecular biology laboratory could start this year.
Frontier Tier four settles the photosynthesis dispute and is already specified in the literature. Perturb a specific vibronic resonance or dephasing channel while holding pigment geometry and site energies as fixed as possible, then test whether the change tracks only the spectroscopic oscillations or also the measured transport efficiency. Speculative If efficiency moves with the resonance, vibronic coherence is functional; if only the oscillations move, it is a signature. The obstacle is that isotopic or mutational perturbations change more than one thing at once, which is the same confound that defeats the olfaction experiments.
Speculative Tier five is a cheap crossover that would kill or keep the whole nuclear-spin programme. Compare xenon-129, nuclear spin one half, against xenon-132, nuclear spin zero, at matched anaesthetic potency, on a behavioural endpoint. Handwave One such test has already returned no isotope dependence, and the response has been to narrow the hypothesis rather than abandon it. A pre-registered replication with a stated effect size and a stated stopping rule is worth more here than any new theory, and it costs the price of isotopically enriched gas.
Speculative Tier six is the receptor-resolved olfaction assay that the vibrational theory has never been given. Measure responses at the level of individual olfactory receptors using isotopologues designed so that non-vibrational differences in binding affinity are minimised. Speculative Behavioural discrimination of isotopologues is not diagnostic and never was, because deuteration changes non-covalent interaction energies as well as vibrational frequencies.
Established Tier seven is the one programme that already works and should be extended rather than defended. Combine targeted amino-acid substitutions, substrate and solvent isotope substitution and dynamical modelling constrained by independent structural data, and where possible a directed-evolution series that tunes tunnelling signatures systematically. Frontier The soybean lipoxygenase double mutant, with its kinetic isotope effect of 661 ± 27 and its enhanced rigidification under pressure, is what this method produces. It is the template for what a mature quantum-biology result looks like: a number, a mutant, a model, and a competing classical account that has to be argued against rather than ignored.
Frontier And the experiments that are not tests of quantum biology and are routinely reported as though they were. Microtubule-stabiliser effects on anaesthetic induction, magnetic field effects on cell cultures at millitesla fields, and coherence signatures in two-dimensional spectra of ensembles are measurements of pharmacology, of chemistry and of lineshape respectively. Speculative Each is consistent with a quantum interpretation and none discriminates against the classical one, which is the property that makes an experiment a test.
8 · Engineering requirements
Frontier There is no engineering programme in this subject, and saying so precisely is more useful than inventing one. What exists is a list of instruments that would have to be built for the experiments in section 7, and every one of them is being built for another reason.
Speculative The compass measurement needs a low-field spectrometer, not a new physics. Broadband cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy already resolves a few microOD of magnetically induced absorbance change; the requirement is to hold that resolution while the applied field drops from 30 mT to 50 µT, which means magnetic shielding, active field control, photodegradation management and averaging times long enough to be limited by protein lifetime rather than by noise. Speculative This is an achievable instrument and nobody has published one, which is the most actionable sentence in this brief.
Speculative The in vivo measurements need quantum sensors that Precision Quantum Sensing is developing for metrology and Quantum Materials supplies the diamond for. Nitrogen-vacancy magnetometry at the sensitivity and standoff a retina requires is a sensing-hardware problem that quantum biology will inherit rather than solve. Handwave A field whose decisive instruments are all someone else’s roadmap has very little control over its own timeline, and section 13 is written accordingly.
Frontier The organism engineering is the real capital requirement. A germline-editable night-migratory songbird means primordial germ cell culture, a transgenesis protocol, a breeding facility with controlled photoperiod, and an ethics case for editing a wild migratory species. Speculative The nearest existing capability is avian germline work in poultry and in one or two laboratory finches, and the gap to a robin is a decade of animal husbandry rather than a technology.
9 · Adjacent technologies
Established The nearest brief on this map is Orch OR, and the two pages are deliberately disjoint. That brief owns the proposal that consciousness is gravitational self-collapse in microtubules, including the decoherence-time argument and its misreported refutation. Frontier This page owns sensory and enzymatic quantum biology — the cases where a quantum resource is proposed to do a job the organism demonstrably does — and treats microtubule quantum claims only where they are presented as evidence for quantum biology generally. The epothilone B result in section 3 belongs to both pages and means different things on each.
Frontier Three adjacencies supply instruments rather than ideas. Precision Quantum Sensing is building the magnetometry every speculative tier in this brief waits on. Quantum Materials supplies the diamond and the low-noise substrates. Metrology Infrastructure carries the field-control and shielding practice that a 50 microtesla protein measurement would need. Speculative None of the three has quantum biology as a driver, and all three would deliver what it needs anyway.
Frontier Two adjacencies would inherit a result. Artificial Photosynthesis spent a decade with coherence-inspired design language in its literature; the December 2025 verdict that electronic coherence does not enhance transport under physiological conditions removes the biological warrant for that language without touching the engineering. Speculative Biological Computing occasionally borrows quantum-biology framing for claims about information processing in cells, and this page supplies the reason to be careful about it.
Speculative One adjacency is a conservation question hiding in a physics result. If anthropogenic radiofrequency noise at tens of nanotesla disrupts migratory orientation, then the electromagnetic environment is a habitat variable, which puts this subject next to Biodiversity Restoration and inside the remit of spectrum regulators who have never been asked about birds. Handwave That is the only place in this brief where an unresolved mechanism already has a policy consequence.
10 · Institutional requirements
Frontier Quantum biology has no home department, and its institutional shape follows from that. The results in section 3 come from physical chemistry groups, animal navigation groups, structural biologists and computational physicists who publish together and are evaluated separately. Speculative The avian compass work in particular is carried by a standing collaboration between a chemistry department in Oxford and a biology department in Oldenburg, with the spectroscopy, the birds and the simulations in three places — an arrangement that produces excellent papers and no succession plan.
Speculative The funding failure is specific: nobody funds the null. The measurement this field most needs is a magnetic field effect at 50 microtesla, and the most likely outcome of attempting it with present sensitivity is a limit rather than a signal. Handwave A limit on a reaction-yield change is a publishable result in physics and an unfundable one in biology, and that asymmetry is why the decisive instrument in section 8 has not been built. The same asymmetry is visible in Objective Collapse Models, where the strongest bounds all came from instruments built for other questions.
Frontier Interested parties are entering, and they should be read as what they are. A venture capital firm published an investment thesis in April 2025 identifying enzyme-targeted drug development, super-resolution imaging, biosensing, crop photosynthesis, artificial photosynthesis and quantum batteries as quantum-biology opportunities, while conceding that harnessing the phenomena for applied purposes is enormously challenging and naming no company, round or date. Speculative An investment thesis with no portfolio in it is a statement of interest, not evidence of a market.
Speculative The institution this field most needs is a norm rather than a building. Claims here move between disciplines whose evidentiary standards differ by an order of magnitude, and the same result — an oscillation in a two-dimensional spectrum, an isotope effect, a disorientation in a funnel — is a strong claim in one field and a weak one in another. Handwave A pre-registration and replication convention for quantum-biology claims, agreed before the next result rather than after it, is the cheapest thing on any list in this brief and the one nobody is organising.
11 · Ethical & societal considerations
Frontier The ethical load in this subject is carried almost entirely by the animals. The in vivo evidence comes from wild-caught night-migratory songbirds held through migratory restlessness, tested in orientation funnels, and in the proposed decisive experiment genetically modified. Speculative Editing the germline of a wild migratory species to test a hypothesis about how it navigates is a proposition that no ethics framework this brief could find has been asked to rule on, and the answer is not obvious: the modified animals would be laboratory animals, but the species is a free-living migrant and the trait being disabled is the one that lets it migrate.
Speculative The radiofrequency result has a live welfare and policy edge. If broadband noise at tens of nanotesla disorients migrants, then the ordinary electromagnetic environment of a European city is a sensory insult to a passing bird, and the experiments that establish this necessarily consist of disorienting animals. Handwave Nobody has estimated a population-level effect, and in the absence of one the policy question cannot be posed honestly.
Frontier The other ethical problem is epistemic and it is the field’s own. A 2026 review in a clinical translation journal presents photosynthetic coherence with efficiencies above 90%, cryptochrome detection at 50 microtesla, and coherence-lifetime biomarkers distinguishing healthy from cancerous mitochondria, in a venue read by clinicians. Established Two of those three claims are contradicted by work cited in section 3 of this brief, and the third has no measurement behind it. Speculative The harm is not that a speculative review exists; it is that a clinician reading a clinical journal has no way to know that the field’s flagship claim was reinterpreted eight months earlier. Precision Medicine inherits that risk directly.
Speculative A smaller ethical point, stated because it recurs. Quantum-biology framing is used to lend physical respectability to claims about consciousness, free will and mind, and the traffic runs one way. Handwave Nothing established in this brief bears on any of those questions, and a reader who arrives here from Consciousness Research should leave with less confidence in the connection, not more.
12 · Civilizational implications
Frontier The civilizational consequences of this subject are small, contingent and mostly epistemic, and a brief that claimed otherwise would be the kind of document section 15 exists to correct.
Speculative The largest concrete consequence is regulatory and it concerns birds rather than people. Migratory songbirds move on the order of billions of individuals annually across the northern hemisphere, and if their compass is a spin-chemical device disrupted by ambient radiofrequency noise at tens of nanotesla, then spectrum allocation, urban electromagnetic hygiene and the siting of broadband emitters acquire an ecological dimension they do not currently have. Handwave No population-level impact has been measured, so the honest civilizational statement is that a new environmental variable may exist and nobody has sized it.
Speculative The second consequence is a design lesson with a negative sign. For fifteen years the idea that photosynthesis exploits quantum coherence supplied a design metaphor to light-harvesting materials, sensing and even computing architectures. Frontier The December 2025 position — that nature appears to use strong system–bath coupling to get robust transport classically — is arguably the more useful engineering lesson, because robustness under noise is a design target anyone can pursue and coherence at 300 K is not. A civilization that learned the wrong lesson for fifteen years and then corrected it is the normal case, and the correction is worth more than the original claim.
Frontier The third is about how a field recovers from its own headline. Quantum biology was popularised on a result that has since been reassigned, and the field is in better empirical shape now than it was at the height of its fame. Speculative That gap — between a subject’s reputation and its evidence, moving in opposite directions — is the thing worth exporting from this page, and it is the same pattern Scientific Revolutions describes from the other end.
13 · Timelines
These horizons track measurements and animal models rather than products, because there is no product line in this subject to track:
- 10 yr: Frontier Expect the signalling-partner question created by the 2025 chicken result to be the field’s main effort, and expect it to be answered by interactomics rather than by spectroscopy. Speculative Expect at least one serious attempt at a magnetic field effect on cryptochrome below 1 mT, and expect the first published result to be a limit rather than a signal. Frontier Expect the photosynthesis dispute to be settled by a perturbation experiment rather than by another simulation, and expect the answer to be that vibronic mixing is a signature.
- 25 yr: Speculative This is the window in which a loss-of-function test in a migrant becomes possible, if and only if avian germline editing matures in a species someone is willing to keep. Speculative A positive result — compass abolished, star compass intact, radiofrequency control null — would make cryptochrome the first molecularly identified magnetoreceptor in any vertebrate and would settle a question open since 1972. Handwave A negative result would leave the field with strong behavioural evidence for a spin-dependent sense and no molecule, which is a worse position than it occupies now.
- 50 yr: Handwave On this horizon the interesting question is whether quantum biology remains a field at all or dissolves back into biophysics, enzymology and sensory ecology with its results intact. Speculative The dissolution outcome is the modal one and is not a failure: a subject whose established claims have been absorbed by the disciplines that can test them has succeeded.
- 100 / 250+ yr: Handwave Beyond useful forecasting. Handwave The defensible statement is structural rather than temporal: a field whose central claims are all measurable in principle either gets measured or gets abandoned, and this one has had the instruments it needs in sight for about a decade without acquiring them.
14 · Technology tree & dependencies
- Depends on No brief on this map produces a result this subject waits on, and the absence is a fact about the field rather than a gap in the corpus. The nearest pages supply instruments and context: Precision Quantum Sensing is developing the magnetometry every speculative tier here needs, Quantum Materials the substrates, and Genetic Engineering the avian germline methods the decisive experiment in section 7 is blocked on. Orch OR is adjacent rather than upstream: nothing on this page depends on it, and section 15 explains why the dependency is often asserted in the other direction.
- Requires (not on this map) Six conditions, in the order of the tokens above. The low-field measurement. A reaction-yield change in purified cryptochrome at 50 microtesla, against published effects of a few microOD at 30 mT with a half-saturating field near 4 mT; this single number converts the molecular case from plausible to demonstrated. The animal. A night-migratory songbird with primordial germ cell culture, a transgenesis protocol and a breeding facility, none of which exists for any migrant. The partner. The protein that reads Cry4a’s signal in a retina, which the 2025 chicken result made the central question by showing that sensing does not distinguish migrants from non-migrants. The spectrometer. Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy on one complex at physiological temperature, which would end the coherent-versus-vibrational dispute by removing the ensemble average that creates it. The isotopes. Enriched xenon-129 and xenon-132, and lithium-6 and lithium-7, at anaesthetic and pharmacological purity, for the crossover tests that would settle the nuclear-spin programme in either direction. The convention. A pre-registration and replication norm agreed across the physics, chemistry and biology communities that share this subject — the cheapest requirement on this list and the one whose absence does the most damage.
- Enables A demonstrated spin-chemical magnetoreceptor would give Sensory Restoration a worked example of a sense built from chemistry rather than from mechanics, and would give Biodiversity Restoration an electromagnetic habitat variable it does not currently measure. A settled answer on vibronic coherence would remove a design metaphor from Artificial Photosynthesis without changing any of its engineering. No typed enabling edge is claimed, because a field with one demonstrated mechanism and no in vivo result enables nothing on a schedule.
- Adjacent Spin chemistry, ultrafast spectroscopy, animal navigation and enzymology supply every number on this page. Within this map: Orch OR for the microtubule claims this page declines to re-run, Consciousness Research and Integrated Information Theory for the traffic between quantum framing and mind, Objective Collapse Models for the shared problem of a theory that retreats when measured, Biological Computing for the information-processing borrowings, and Homochirality Origins for the one other place in this corpus where a spin-dependent chemical asymmetry is proposed to have biological consequences.
15 · Common misconceptions & speculative claims
Established Claim in circulation: photosynthesis uses quantum coherence to achieve near-perfect energy transfer efficiency. This is the field’s most repeated sentence and it is no longer supported. Established The 2017 ambient-temperature two-dimensional photon-echo study of the Fenna–Matthews–Olson complex found an electronic coherence lifetime of about 60 femtoseconds and no long-lived electronic coherence; the December 2025 review concludes that electronic coherence is too fragile to enhance energy transfer under physiological conditions and that the long-lived oscillations are vibrational oscillations in the ground state. Frontier A 2026 review in a clinical journal nonetheless states the coherence-efficiency claim as established, which is how a retired result survives: it moves to a literature that does not read the one that retired it.
Established Claim: birds have been shown to have a quantum compass. What has been shown is that a candidate protein produces magnetic field effects in vitro at 30 mT with a half-saturating field near 4 mT, and that bird orientation is disrupted by weak radiofrequency fields. Speculative Nobody has measured a magnetic field effect in any cryptochrome at the 50 microtesla field a bird actually uses, and nobody has shown that Cry4a is necessary for the compass in a living animal. Frontier The gap is not a quibble: a factor of eighty in field strength is where the whole amplification question lives.
Frontier Claim: the migratory bird’s protein is special. This was the natural reading of the 2021 result and it is the reading the commission for this brief inherited. Established The 2025 study of chicken Cry4a found magnetic field effects of about −4 microOD at 30 mT in the wild-type non-migratory protein, the same half-saturating field, the same full tryptophan tetrad confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance, and the same fourfold enhancement and lifetime extension from 60 to 299 nanoseconds on truncating the tryptophan chain. Frontier The authors conclude that any difference between migratory and non-migratory Cry4a must lie in signalling rather than sensing. Speculative The sentence to retire is “the migrant’s protein is more magnetically sensitive”; the sentence to keep is “the migrant’s protein is embedded in something the chicken’s is not, and nobody knows what”.
Speculative Claim: the anaesthetic and microtubule results prove quantum effects in the brain. The measured result is that microtubule stabilisation with epothilone B delayed loss of righting reflex in rats by 69 seconds under 4% isoflurane, with eight animals, a large effect size and p = 0.0016. Frontier That is good evidence that microtubules are an anaesthetic target. Handwave It is not evidence about coherence, because no step of the experiment measures a quantum state and a classical account — altered drug partitioning into a stabilised polymer — predicts the same outcome. Orch OR carries the full argument.
Speculative Claim: enzymes use quantum mechanics to catalyse reactions. Tunnelling in enzymatic hydrogen transfer is established, and the kinetic isotope effects are spectacular. Frontier What does not follow is that tunnelling is the source of catalytic power. A long-standing objection holds that the enzyme’s rate enhancement comes from electrostatic preorganisation of the active site, and that tunnelling is what happens once the barrier has been narrowed by ordinary means — present, measurable, and not the explanation. Speculative This brief treats the tunnelling as established and its catalytic significance as contested, and readers should be suspicious of any source that does not distinguish the two.
Speculative Claim: the vibrational theory of smell is established, or refuted. Neither. Speculative The evidence in favour remains largely theoretical, and the evidence against emphasises biochemical feasibility and the absence of receptor-level measurements that uniquely require inelastic tunnelling. Handwave The experiment that would decide it — receptor-resolved responses to isotopologues matched for binding affinity — has been specified for years and not run, and behavioural isotope discrimination in insects and humans is not diagnostic because deuteration changes binding as well as vibration.
Speculative Claim: entanglement has been observed in a living system. Handwave No experiment has reported entanglement between biological degrees of freedom that cannot be reproduced by a classical coupled-oscillator model of the same apparatus. Speculative The radical-pair mechanism does involve a spin-correlated pair whose singlet character is an entangled state, and that is a legitimate and much narrower claim: the entanglement is between two electron spins a few nanometres apart for tens to hundreds of nanoseconds, inside one molecule, and it is inferred from reaction yields rather than witnessed directly.
Frontier Claim: quantum biology is about to produce medicine. Speculative The forward-looking literature offers coherence-lifetime biomarkers for ageing and cancer, drugs that suppress tunnelling-driven DNA tautomerisation to reduce mutation rates, and therapeutic restoration of electron delocalisation to lower reactive oxygen species. Handwave Every one of these rests on measuring a coherence property in living tissue, which section 5 says nobody can do, and the reviews proposing them say so themselves in the paragraph after the proposal. Frontier The useful distinction for a reader is between quantum biology — whether quantum resources do biological work — and quantum technology applied to biology, which is quantum sensing and is progressing normally without needing any of this to be true.
Established And a distinction the field itself often blurs: quantum versus quantum-like. A growing literature applies the mathematics of quantum probability to cognition and decision-making as a modelling formalism, with no claim that neurons are coherent. Speculative Those models are not evidence for physical quantum effects in the brain and their authors generally say so; the conflation happens downstream, in summaries, and it is one of the most reliable sources of confusion in this subject.
