1 · Why this matters

Frontier If the amplification measured in four separate laboratories is drawn from the stored rotational energy and angular momentum of the spinning body — which no experiment has yet shown with a calibrated energy balance, and section 7 says what would — then this is the first bench demonstration of the physics by which a rotating black hole gives up energy, running on a benchtop instead of a horizon. That is the prize, and it is a scientific one before it is an engineering one.

Established What has actually been banked is a set of positive results, and they are what makes this brief distinct in the corpus: it is the only exotic energy-extraction mechanism here with measured amplification rather than a null. Surface water waves off a draining vortex were amplified by 14% ± 8% (Torres et al. 2017); acoustic modes carrying orbital angular momentum through a rotating absorber gained “up to 30% or more” (Cromb et al. 2020); a spinning aluminium cylinder in an LC circuit turned its own resistance negative, by 75 standard deviations at 335 Hz (Braidotti et al. 2024); and a photon superfluid returned a 5% Penrose amplification (Braidotti et al. 2022).

Frontier The gain accrues to analogue gravity, quantum optics, acoustics and precision metrology, not to anyone building a power plant. Every one of those amplifications ran on a reservoir kept topped up from outside — a pump, a motor, a laser, a modulation drive — so the deliverable for a reader who arrived wanting a power source is a converter and an amplifier, not a well. Net extraction from an isolated, freely spinning body has been measured only in the quantum spontaneous limit, where the effect is real and its magnitude is a few femtowatts.

Speculative The condition, stated plainly: the upside is a laboratory analogue of black-hole energy extraction only if the surplus wave energy is shown to come from the rotor rather than from the drive. That single measurement — the one in section 5 that the whole subject turns on — has not been published, and until it is, the honest headline is narrower than the vocabulary of “energy extraction” suggests.

2 · Concept overview

Established Rotational superradiance is the amplification of a wave when it scatters off a rotating body, at the expense of the body’s rotational energy and angular momentum. It is a classical, dissipative effect: it needs a rotating object that can absorb, and a wave whose frequency and azimuthal structure meet one inequality. It is not a black-hole effect that happens to have analogues; it is the general phenomenon of which black-hole superradiance is one instance.

Established The condition is 0 < ω < mΩ. A wave of angular frequency ω and azimuthal number m, scattering off a body rotating at angular velocity Ω, is amplified whenever its frequency is below mΩ (Cardoso, Coutant, Richartz and Weinfurtner, 2016). The mechanism is a change of sign, not a resonance: in the body’s co-rotating frame the wave is rotationally Doppler-shifted to a frequency ω − mΩ, and once that is negative, what would have been absorption reads as gain. Marion Cromb put it exactly for the electromagnetic case — “negative frequency then means negative absorption, and this means amplification.”

Established Yakov Zel’dovich predicted the effect in 1971, for the case a reader would least expect it: an ordinary rotating absorbing cylinder amplifying electromagnetic waves. The review literature records it as Zel’dovich showing that “scattering of radiation off rotating absorbing surfaces results, under certain conditions, in waves with a larger amplitude” (Brito, Cardoso and Pani, Superradiance, 2015). The same paper carried the deeper claim that makes this subject matter: Frontier when quantum effects are included the amplification becomes spontaneous — a rotating body should emit even into the vacuum and slow down, exactly as a rotating black hole is argued to.

Established This is the same family as the Penrose process and black-hole energy extraction. Roger Penrose showed in 1969 that energy can be extracted from a rotating black hole’s ergoregion; superradiance is the wave version of the same bookkeeping, and in general relativity it is “permitted by dissipation at the event horizon, which allows energy extraction from the vacuum, even at the classical level” (Brito, Cardoso and Pani). Frontier The laboratory programme of the last decade set out to reproduce that bookkeeping without a black hole, in fluids, in sound, in light and in circuits.

Speculative The single distinction the rest of this brief keeps returning to is between amplifying a probe wave and generating net power. Amplification takes a small incoming wave and returns a larger one, drawing the difference from the rotation; if the rotation is maintained by a motor, the motor ultimately pays. Whether the energy is genuinely being drawn from the body’s stored angular momentum — the thing that would make it black-hole-like — or simply from the drive keeping it spinning is a measurement nobody has reported, and it is the reason this brief flags “energy extraction” carefully every time it appears.

3 · Current scientific position

Established The measured record is the reason this brief exists, and it is genuinely positive across four different wave sectors. Each result is real, published in a strong venue, and consistent with the 0 < ω < mΩ condition. What follows reads each one for the same thing: the amplification, and where the energy came from.

Established Water waves, 2017: the first laboratory observation. Torres, Patrick, Coutant, Richartz, Tedford and Weinfurtner sent surface waves onto a draining vortex — water swirling out of a tank, a standard analogue-gravity “dumb hole” — and measured the reflected amplitude. “The maximum amplification measured was 14% ± 8%, obtained for 3.70 Hz waves, in a 6.25-cm-deep fluid” (Nature Physics, 2017). Frontier The large fractional error bar is the honest headline of that paper: the effect was seen, but at 14% ± 8% it was a detection rather than a precision measurement, and the energy of the amplified wave was drawn from a flow that the pump kept refilling.

Established Sound, 2020: the acoustic Zel’dovich effect, and a correction to this brief’s commission. The commission attributes the 2020 sound result to “Torres et al.”; the sweep got the authorship wrong. The paper is Cromb, Gibson, Toninelli, Padgett, Wright and Faccio, Amplification of waves from a rotating body (Nature Physics, 2020) — a different group, from the 2017 water-vortex team. It transmitted low-frequency acoustic modes carrying orbital angular momentum through a rotating absorbing disk and found them “amplified by up to 30% or more when the disk rotation rate satisfies the Zel’dovich condition.” Frontier This is the cleanest bench realisation of Zel’dovich’s picture: a wave, an absorber, a rotation, and gain — but the disk was turned by a motor throughout.

Established Electromagnetism, 2024: Zel’dovich’s own case, fifty-three years later. Braidotti, Vinante, Cromb, Sandakumar, Faccio and Ulbricht placed a smooth aluminium cylinder (radius a = 2 cm), spun up to 500 Hz, in the gap of a toroidal LC circuit, and looked at the resistance the cylinder added to the circuit at four resonances (107, 175, 277 and 335 Hz). When the Zel’dovich condition was met the cylinder’s induced resistance went negative — the signature of amplification — and the effect was “negative by 75 std. dev. at f0 = 335 Hz” (Nature Communications, 2024; arXiv, 2023). Frontier The paper states plainly that “the rotating medium loses part of its rotational energy to the outgoing waves, which are amplified,” but it reports no torque or motor-power measurement, so the sign of the resistance is measured and the source of the energy is asserted.

Established Light, 2022: the Penrose process in a photon superfluid. Braidotti and colleagues (Physical Review Letters 128, 013901) sent a weak signal beam carrying orbital angular momentum into a thermo-optic self-defocusing medium — methanol with a low concentration of graphene nanoflakes — through which a strong pump vortex created an effective ergoregion (radius r_e = 118 µm for pump charge l = 1). They measured “a maximum amplification of 5%.” Frontier Here the honest reading matters most: the amplified signal’s energy comes from the pump beam (252 mW at l = 1) via four-wave mixing, not from a spinning mass. The “rotation” is the phase winding of an optical vortex, and the reservoir is a laser. It is a faithful Penrose analogue and it is not extraction from stored angular momentum.

Frontier Three more results fill in the shape of the field. Pedergnana and Noiray turned a lossy, weakly reflective acoustic scatterer into a reflection amplifier using deep-cavity whistling — a self-sustained limit cycle rather than a rigid rotation (Physical Review Applied 20, 034068, 2023). Frontier Nasari, Moussa, Kasahara, Thielens and Alù reported the “Observation of Floquet rotational super-radiance” in a ring network of time-modulated resonators, with “angular-momentum-selective amplification” and angular-momentum bandgaps emerging when the synthetic medium is driven at effective superluminal speeds (Nature 655, 2026). Speculative And an earlier proposal — Braidotti, Vinante, Gasbarri, Faccio and Ulbricht, “Zel’dovich Amplification in a Superconducting Circuit” (PRL 125, 140801, 2020) — coupled a levitated spinning microsphere to low-frequency circuit modes precisely because “the mechanical rotation frequency of the cylinder must be comparable with the EM oscillation frequency,” the condition that had kept the electromagnetic case unmeasured for half a century.

Established The common thread across every positive result is the one this brief will not let go of: the reservoir was maintained from outside. A pump refilled the vortex; a motor turned the disk and the cylinder; a laser drove the photon fluid; a modulation drive spun the Floquet ring. Frontier That does not make the amplifications false — the wave really did leave larger than it arrived, and the sign really did flip. It makes the phrase “energy extraction” a claim about provenance that the measurements have not yet tested.

4 · Frontier questions

Frontier The load-bearing open question is provenance: does the surplus wave energy come from the body’s stored angular momentum, or from the drive that keeps it spinning? Every experiment to date runs at fixed rotation, so the motor silently replaces whatever the wave takes. The distinction is not pedantic: extraction from stored angular momentum, with the body measurably slowing, is the black-hole analogue; extraction from a maintained drive is an induction generator. Nothing in the current data set separates them.

Frontier The quantum, spontaneous version is where the provenance is unambiguous — and where the magnitude collapses. Maghrebi, Jaffe and Kardar showed that a lossy rotating object spontaneously emits into the vacuum, “the radiation only comes from the frequency window 0 < ω < Ωm for the mth partial wave,” and slows as a result, on a timescale they estimate as τ ~ (I/ℏ)(c³/LR²Ω³) (PRL 108, 230403, 2012). Established This is genuine extraction from stored angular momentum, with no external drive. Frontier But it is astronomically small: Khosravi and colleagues, computing vacuum friction for spinning yttrium iron garnet nanospheres — the most favourable case known — find a free-space stopping time “on the order of the age of the universe,” falling to “about 1 day” only when the sphere is placed nanometres from a resonant interface (arXiv, 2024).

Speculative Whether the confined version can be made to run away is a real and testable question. The review literature notes that superradiant amplification, once trapped between reflecting surfaces, “can give rise to strong instabilities known as black-hole bombs” (Brito, Cardoso and Pani). A rotating absorber inside a cavity tuned to the amplified band is the analogue, and no laboratory has yet built one that self-amplifies from noise. Frontier If one did, the energy it drew would still have to be paid by the rotation, which returns the whole subject to the same balance sheet.

Frontier Do the analogue platforms — the photon superfluid, the Floquet ring — count as rotational superradiance at all? Both reproduce the mathematics and the 0 < ω < mΩ selection faithfully, and both are driven systems in which the “rotation” is a phase winding or a space-time modulation rather than a moving mass. Speculative The field has not settled whether these are demonstrations of the effect or elegant simulators of its equations, and the answer bears directly on what “the first laboratory confirmation” is a confirmation of.

Frontier The quantum electromagnetic regime is the frontier the experimentalists themselves name. The 2024 team wrote that their result opens “the generation of photons out of the quantum vacuum stimulated by a mechanical rotation” — the rotating-body analogue of the dynamical Casimir effect. Speculative Reaching it means driving mechanical rotation and electromagnetic frequency into the same range at cryogenic, low-loss conditions, and no group has reported vacuum photons from a spinning body.

5 · Technological bottlenecks

Established The governing constraint is the condition itself: amplification needs mΩ > ω, so either the rotation is fast or the azimuthal order is high. For sound and water waves, where the wave speed is low, laboratory rotation rates comfortably clear the bound. For electromagnetism they do not, which is why Zel’dovich’s own case waited fifty-three years.

Established The electromagnetic case was unlocked by lowering ω, not by raising Ω. The 2024 experiment worked at circuit resonances of a few hundred hertz and spun the cylinder to 500 Hz, so that a modest mechanical rate could exceed a deliberately low electromagnetic frequency. Frontier Pushing the same effect to optical or microwave frequencies — where photons from the vacuum become conceivable — would require mechanical rotation rates that no bearing survives, which is exactly why the superconducting-circuit and levitated-microsphere routes exist.

Frontier The measurement that the whole subject turns on is an energy balance, and it is a metrology problem, not a physics one. To show the wave energy is drawn from the rotor you must resolve a small change in drag torque against the large baseline torque the motor already supplies against friction and windage. Speculative At the amplification levels reported — tens of percent of a weak probe — that surplus is a tiny fraction of the rotor’s power budget, and separating it cleanly is the bottleneck this brief keeps naming.

Established Losses are not a nuisance here; they are the mechanism. Superradiance requires dissipation — a perfectly reflecting rotor amplifies nothing — so the rotor must absorb enough to couple, yet not so much that ordinary Ohmic or viscous heating swamps the gain. Frontier Tuning that balance is why material choice (conductivity for the EM cylinder, porosity for the acoustic disk) is a design variable rather than an afterthought.

Frontier The spontaneous route is bottlenecked by nothing but magnitude. The vacuum-friction calculations show the effect is real for any lossy rotating body; they also show it is a few femtowatts for the best case yet found, which places any “spinning body as a source” proposal below the noise of its own bearings by many orders of magnitude.

6 · Research dependencies

Frontier The subject’s progress is gated less by new physics than by three supporting capabilities, all of which exist in adjacent fields and none of which has been pointed at this question.

Frontier First, precision torque and power metrology. The decisive energy balance in section 7 needs sub-percent resolution of a drive’s mechanical power delivery, referenced with and without an amplified wave present. Established The techniques exist in flywheel testing and in optically levitated rotor work; they have not been combined with a superradiance rig.

Frontier Second, low-loss, high-speed rotors. The cleanest tests of the quantum and cavity regimes want a body that spins fast, loses little to its bearings, and still couples to the wave — magnetically levitated microspheres and superconducting rotors are the natural substrates. Speculative This is where the topic leans on Superconducting Infrastructure and on levitated-optomechanics hardware developed for entirely different reasons.

Frontier Third, the analogue-gravity theory that tells you what to measure. The mapping from a draining vortex or a photon fluid to a rotating spacetime is what licenses calling any of this “black-hole” physics, and it is the same body of work that Black Hole Physics Applications and Quantum Gravity depend on. Established The dependency runs both ways: superradiance is one of the few analogue predictions that has actually been measured, so it is evidence for the mapping as much as a consumer of it.

7 · Required experiments

Frontier This brief has an unusually sharp experimental section, because the decisive test needs no new physics and no new hardware — only an instrument nobody has yet added to a rig that already exists.

Frontier The decisive experiment is a calibrated energy balance on a rotating-body amplifier: measure the mechanical power the drive delivers to the rotor, with and without the amplified wave present, and show that the surplus wave energy is matched by increased drag on the rotor rather than by the motor doing extra work at constant speed. Speculative If the rotor’s drag torque rises by exactly the amplified power divided by its angular velocity, the energy is coming from the rotation, and the black-hole analogy is earned; if the motor simply draws more current while the rotor spins unchanged, it is an induction generator wearing an exotic name. Nobody has published this balance, and it is the single measurement that would most change this brief’s assessment.

Frontier The stronger version removes the motor entirely: spin a low-loss rotor up, cut the drive, and measure whether an incident wave satisfying 0 < ω < mΩ both comes back amplified and measurably slows the rotor. Speculative A freely spinning body that gives up angular momentum to a wave is the cleanest possible statement of the effect, and the hard part is keeping bearing and windage losses below the tiny superradiant drag long enough to see it — which is why the levitated and superconducting rotor routes matter.

Established A near-term, duller experiment is simply to replicate the 2024 electromagnetic result with a torque sensor on the shaft. The negative-resistance signature is already at 75 standard deviations; adding calibrated shaft-power monitoring converts a measured circuit quantity into a measured mechanical one. Frontier It is within reach of the existing apparatus and would settle the provenance question for the electromagnetic case on its own.

Speculative The cavity, or “black-hole bomb,” experiment tests whether the amplification can bootstrap from noise. Enclose a rotating absorber in a resonator tuned to the superradiant band and look for self-excitation with no injected probe. Frontier A positive result would be spectacular and would still not violate energy conservation — the growing field would be drawing on the rotation, and the same energy-balance instrumentation would be needed to prove it.

Speculative The quantum experiment is the generation of photons from the vacuum by a spinning body, the rotating-body cousin of the dynamical Casimir effect that the 2024 authors explicitly name as the next target. Handwave No group has reported it, the conditions (cryogenic, low-loss, mechanical and electromagnetic frequencies driven together) are severe, and any near-term claim should be read as a research direction rather than a result.

8 · Engineering requirements

Frontier Asking what it would take to engineer a device forces the honest answer first: a rotating-body superradiance amplifier is, in energy terms, an induction machine. It converts mechanical rotation into amplified wave energy, and like every induction generator it delivers only what the shaft is fed minus losses. Built as a converter it is unremarkable; built as a “source” it is a perpetual-motion claim, and the same balance sheet that governs Vacuum Energy Engineering governs it.

Frontier Where it might earn an engineering slot is as a low-input parametric amplifier or a non-reciprocal element. The Floquet and limit-cycle realisations turn a passive lossy scatterer into a reflection amplifier with no active gain medium, which is a genuine capability in acoustics and microwave engineering. Speculative Whether a rotating or time-modulated element beats a conventional amplifier on noise or power in any real application is unmeasured, and that comparison — not a power output — is the engineering figure of merit.

Frontier The hardware demands sit in adjacent fields. The high-speed low-loss rotors point at Superconducting Infrastructure and levitated optomechanics; the energy accounting points at the flywheel and rotor metrology of Energy Storage Revolutions. Established None of these needs to be invented; they need to be combined, which is a systems-integration task rather than a research programme, and it is cheap by the standards of this corpus.

9 · Adjacent technologies

Established Analogue gravity is the parent field. The draining-vortex and photon-fluid experiments are analogue-gravity apparatus first and superradiance apparatus second, and the same groups probe Hawking-like emission and horizon physics; the mapping is what connects this brief to Black Hole Physics Applications, Primordial Black Holes and Quantum Gravity.

Frontier Time-varying and space-time metamaterials are the fastest-moving neighbour. The 2026 Floquet result sits in the same research line as photonic time-crystals and space-time-modulated media, where amplification and non-reciprocity come from modulation rather than motion. Frontier That community brings measurement discipline and device concepts this subject has lacked.

Frontier Quantum friction and rotational vacuum dissipation are the spontaneous-limit neighbour. The vacuum-friction literature — spinning nanospheres, Casimir torques, self-torque — is the same physics as spontaneous rotational superradiance, studied by a different community for its own sake, and it supplies the hard magnitude estimates this brief relies on. Established Circuit quantum electrodynamics and the dynamical Casimir effect are the electromagnetic cousins, and precision torque metrology and levitated optomechanics supply the instruments. Adjacent on the map: Negative Mass and Artificial Gravity for the rotation-and-exotic-effects neighbourhood, and Gravitational Wave Engineering for the squeezed-light metrology that these detections increasingly borrow.

10 · Institutional requirements

Established There is no dedicated programme, no budget line and no roadmap for rotational superradiance; it is a by-product of analogue-gravity and quantum-optics groups. The work has come from a small number of university laboratories — Nottingham, Glasgow, Southampton, and now metamaterials groups — funded as fundamental physics, on the scale of single grants rather than facilities.

Frontier That is appropriate to what the subject is and a risk to what it could settle. The decisive energy-balance experiment is cheap and unglamorous, which in this funding structure means it is nobody’s deliverable: it wins no new effect and confirms no headline, it only nails down provenance. Speculative The most likely institutional failure here is not fraud or hype but simple omission — the measurement that matters most going unrun because no grant rewards it.

Frontier The reputational hazard is that “energy extraction” travels badly. The phrase is precise inside the field and reads as free energy outside it, and the topic sits one careless press release away from the reputational company of the claims that Vacuum Energy Engineering spends its length disentangling. Established The honest-flagging discipline this site is built on is worth more here than in most briefs.

11 · Ethical & societal considerations

Frontier The stakes are low and almost entirely epistemic. No one is harmed by a rotating cylinder in an LC circuit, and there is no dual-use dimension worth the name; the ethical content is about honest communication, not physical risk.

Speculative The one real hazard is misappropriation by the free-energy market. A measured, peer-reviewed “amplification of electromagnetic fields by a rotating body” is exactly the kind of true statement that over-unity promoters quote out of context, and the femtowatt magnitude of the spontaneous version is exactly the kind of detail they omit. Established The mitigation is the energy balance: a published provenance measurement removes the ambiguity the misappropriation depends on.

Frontier The second consideration is proportionality of claim. Calling a benchtop result “laboratory black-hole energy extraction” is defensible only with the analogue-gravity mapping stated and the maintained-reservoir caveat attached; without them it is the kind of overclaim that erodes trust in the genuinely careful analogue-gravity programme underneath it.

12 · Civilizational implications

Frontier If rotational superradiance were a net energy source, this section would be the longest in the brief; because it is a converter, it is one of the shortest. An amplifier that pays for its gain out of a maintained rotation changes no energy balance sheet anywhere, and the corpus contains far larger prizes on the supply side.

Frontier The real civilizational content is scientific. A clean laboratory demonstration that a wave can carry off a rotating body’s stored angular momentum is a demonstration, on a bench, of the mechanism by which the most energetic processes in the universe — relativistic jets from spinning black holes — are thought to be powered. Speculative That is a contribution to how a civilization understands its cosmos, of the same kind as detecting a gravitational wave, and it does not need an application to matter.

Speculative The long-shot material consequence, if the spontaneous quantum version could ever be enhanced by orders of magnitude, is a rotating body that emits coherent radiation into the vacuum with no input beyond its spin. Handwave The vacuum-friction numbers say that is many orders of magnitude from useful, and any civilizational claim resting on it is resting on a quantity that is currently a few femtowatts — which is the responsible place to leave it.

13 · Timelines

These horizons track a measurement programme and its one decisive gap, not an engineering roadmap, because there is no device here to build — only a provenance to establish.

  • 10 yr: Frontier Expect the calibrated energy-balance measurement to be done for at least the electromagnetic or acoustic case — it needs only a torque sensor on an existing rig — and expect it to confirm that the surplus energy tracks the rotation. Frontier Expect the time-varying-metamaterial line opened by the 2026 Floquet result to produce most of the near-term activity. Speculative A freely spinning, undriven rotor showing measurable spin-down into a wave is plausible at this horizon and would be the cleanest result in the field.
  • 25 yr: Speculative If the energy balance is settled, the subject stabilises into a chapter of analogue gravity and time-varying-media engineering rather than a field of its own. Speculative A cavity “black-hole bomb” that self-amplifies from noise is a realistic target for this horizon. Handwave Anyone marketing a rotational-superradiance power source at this horizon is marketing an induction generator.
  • 50 yr: Speculative The quantum electromagnetic regime — photons from the vacuum stimulated by mechanical rotation — is the standing prize, contingent on rotor and coupling technology that Superconducting Infrastructure would have to supply. Frontier If reached, it joins the dynamical Casimir effect as a measured vacuum-amplification phenomenon rather than a power technology.
  • 100 / 250+ yr: Handwave Beyond useful forecasting; the defensible statement is about what will still be true. Speculative The 0 < ω < mΩ condition and the accounting behind it are the kind of result that survives, and the measured amplifications will still be textbook demonstrations of it. Handwave The idea of a spinning body as a standalone energy source will still be a femtowatt-scale curiosity unless a physical mechanism nobody has proposed changes the magnitude.

14 · Technology tree & dependencies

  • Depends on Nothing on this map blocks the core experiments — the water, sound and electromagnetic results were obtained with ordinary laboratory hardware, and the decisive energy-balance test needs only instrumentation, not a capability another brief must first produce. Where it leans on the map is for interpretation: the analogue-gravity mapping shared with Black Hole Physics Applications and Quantum Gravity is what licenses reading these amplifications as black-hole physics.
  • Requires (not on this map) The provenance question waits on a calibrated torque balance that ties the amplified wave energy to a measurable spin-down of the rotor — the one measurement this brief says would settle it. The vacuum-photon regime waits on quantum-regime photon emission being demonstrated from a mechanically rotating body, which no group has reported. Both cleaner tests wait on kilohertz magnetically levitated low-loss rotors that hold their spin against bearing and windage losses, and on high-conductivity cryogenic rotor materials that couple to the wave without dissipating the gain as heat.
  • Enables If the energy balance confirms extraction from stored angular momentum, this brief becomes the laboratory anchor for the claim — made throughout Black Hole Physics Applications — that rotational energy can be mined from a spinning body by waves, and it supplies analogue evidence for the horizon accounting that Quantum Gravity treats formally. As an engineering primitive it enables the non-reciprocal and parametric-amplifier concepts of the time-varying-media community.
  • Adjacent Vacuum Energy Engineering shares the exact balance-sheet discipline this brief needs and is the nearest neighbour on the free-energy-misreading hazard; Superconducting Infrastructure and Energy Storage Revolutions supply the rotor and metrology hardware; Negative Mass, Artificial Gravity, Primordial Black Holes and Gravitational Wave Engineering are the rotation, black-hole and precision-metrology siblings.

15 · Common misconceptions & speculative claims

Handwave “Rotational superradiance is free energy.” It is not, and the measurements do not claim it is. Every reported amplification drew its surplus from a reservoir kept full from outside — a pump, a motor, a laser, a modulation drive. Established The wave leaves larger than it arrived, and the energy is conserved because the rotation pays; run the rotor down and the amplification stops. An amplifier is not a source.

Handwave “It extracts energy from the quantum vacuum.” The classical experiments extract energy from a rotation, not from the vacuum. There is a genuine vacuum version — a lossy rotating body spontaneously radiating and slowing — but its measured-best magnitude is a few femtowatts, with a free-space stopping time on the order of the age of the universe. Frontier The vacuum-photon regime the experimentalists are chasing is real and unrealised, not a quiet power source already running.

Frontier “These experiments prove Hawking radiation / prove black holes.” They demonstrate an analogue of black-hole superradiance, which is a different effect from Hawking radiation, and they prove the physics of the analogue system, from which the black-hole case is inferred through a mapping. Speculative That inference is well founded and it is still an inference; the water in the tank is not a black hole, and the honest claim is about the shared mathematics.

Established “The 2020 sound result was Torres et al.” This brief’s own commission carried that attribution and it is wrong: the 2020 acoustic paper is Cromb, Gibson, Toninelli, Padgett, Wright and Faccio; Torres et al. is the 2017 water-vortex paper. Frontier The correction matters because the two are routinely conflated, and the field’s four anchor results come from an overlapping but distinct set of authors across Nottingham, Glasgow and Southampton.

Frontier “Amplification of tens of percent means large power gain.” The percentages are gains on a weak probe wave, not on the rotor’s power budget; a 30% amplified acoustic mode is 30% more of a small number. Speculative Whether the effect can be driven to a regime where the wave power is a meaningful fraction of the mechanical input is unmeasured, and it is the same open question as the energy balance in section 7.

Speculative “The photon-superfluid and Floquet results are the same thing as the spinning cylinder.” They reproduce the same condition and mathematics, but their “rotation” is a phase winding or a synthetic space-time modulation, and their energy comes from a laser or a drive, not from a moving mass. Frontier Whether to count them as the effect or as simulators of it is genuinely unsettled, and it changes what “confirmed in four sectors” is a confirmation of.
