1 · Why this matters

Speculative If the correlations already present in a shared quantum ground state hold energy that a distant party can activate with a measurement and a classical message — which is exactly what quantum energy teleportation (QET) demonstrates — the prize is a laboratory handle on negative energy density and on ground-state entanglement as a physical resource, not a generator. The governing relation, proved by Hotta and confirmed on hardware, is that the energy Alice injects by measuring is never smaller than the energy Bob extracts: E_A ≥ E_B, every round, with no exception. The upside is bounded above by the sender's own input.

Established What has actually been banked is small, positive and matches theory in units. In the minimal two-qubit model at coupling h = k = 1, Bob extracts about 0.115 in the model's energy units against roughly 0.707 injected by Alice — near 16% — and three-qubit variants raise the yield to 67.5% of the interaction energy; the IBM runs reproduced the exact solution to within about 76% (two qubits) and 91% (three qubits) after measurement-error mitigation. The deliverable is a reproducible benchmark that Ikeda reports is achievable “fully… with current quantum computing and communication technologies.”

Frontier The gain accrues to quantum information, circuit quantum electrodynamics and quantum field theory done on a chip — a way to probe negative energy density, the energy-entanglement relation and the thermodynamic cost of measurement — not to anyone building a grid. For a reader who arrived wanting power, the honest deliverable is a negative one with a number attached: the measurement at the sender always supplies more energy than the receiver draws, so QET can never be a source, and its own literature says so.

Handwave The upside is real only for as long as nobody mistakes it for extraction. QET moves no energy from Alice to Bob — Bob's energy was already in his local field — it stores nothing, because the negative-energy region it creates is transient and repaid, and it breaks no conservation law. The part that survives scrutiny is a testable claim about correlations, which is why section 7 asks for a closed energy ledger and section 5 enumerates why this is an instrument rather than a technology.

2 · Concept overview

Established Quantum energy teleportation is a protocol, proposed by Masahiro Hotta in 2008, for making energy that is locally inaccessible at a distant site available as extractable work, using only local operations and classical communication (LOCC). It shares the acronym family and the mathematical furniture of ordinary quantum teleportation, but it transports a physical quantity — extractable energy — rather than an unknown quantum state, and it does so without any excitation travelling from sender to receiver.

Established The mechanism has three steps and a single resource. The resource is ground-state entanglement: in the joint ground state of two coupled systems the local fluctuations at Alice's site are correlated with those at Bob's. First, Alice performs a local measurement on her subsystem; this collapses the correlated state and, unavoidably, injects a positive energy E_A into the system. Second, Alice sends her measurement outcome to Bob over a classical channel. Third, Bob applies a local unitary operation conditioned on that outcome, which suppresses the zero-point fluctuation at his site, drives his local energy density negative, and releases a positive energy E_B that he can bank.

Established The energy Bob extracts was already present in his own neighbourhood; the classical message only tells him how to unlock it. Nothing propagates from Alice carrying energy, which is why the word “teleportation” is apt in the same limited sense as in quantum state teleportation: the useful thing is delivered by classical information plus a pre-shared quantum correlation, not by a beam. Because the message cannot travel faster than light, neither can the effect.

Frontier The counter-intuitive core is the negative energy density. Bob's conditional operation squeezes the zero-point oscillation of his local field below its ground-state value, and Hotta's own phrasing is that “ground-state entanglement induces emergence of negative-energy-density regions in quantum systems by squeezing zero-point oscillation.” This is a genuine, physically real negative energy density — the same object that appears in the Casimir effect and in the exotic-matter requirements of warp and wormhole geometries — but it is bounded, transient, and paid for in advance by Alice.

Established Total energy is conserved throughout and stays non-negative. The system never ends with less energy than the ground state; Alice's input more than covers Bob's output, and the difference remains distributed in the field as residual excitation. QET is therefore best read as a demonstration that the ground state's energy is not uniformly locked — that correlations let one party spend energy to make some of another party's locally-trapped zero-point energy withdrawable — and not as any kind of tap on the vacuum.

Frontier Two neighbouring ideas travel under nearby names and must be kept apart. Quantum batteries store and release work in a quantum system through unitary charging; QET activates already-present energy across a correlated pair. And “ergotropy teleportation” — a 2026 proposal — teleports the maximum unitarily extractable work rather than bare internal energy. QET is the parent protocol; both descendants inherit its ledger, in which the sender's measurement is the funding line.

3 · Current scientific position

Established The theory is settled and the central inequality is not in dispute: E_A ≥ E_B. Hotta's introductory review states plainly that “the input energy E_A is not smaller than the output energy E_B,” and derives it from the passivity of the ground state. There is no parameter regime, in any model studied, in which Bob's yield exceeds Alice's cost. This is the spine of the entire subject: QET is a redistribution and partial-activation protocol, funded by the measurement, and every honest treatment begins here.

Established The ground state is passive, so the vacuum cannot be mined by local operations alone. Hotta is explicit: “if any local unitary operation U_local (≠ I) is performed in the vacuum state, the energy of the field does not decrease but instead increases,” and “the total energy must be non-negative” so a state with less energy than the vacuum “cannot be attained in physics.” What QET adds is a second party: Alice's measurement breaks the passivity locally by injecting energy and by supplying Bob with the classical information he needs. Without both, Bob's best local operation raises the energy, never lowers it.

Established Entanglement is the resource, and it is consumed. Hotta's energy-entanglement relation lower-bounds the entanglement broken by the protocol in terms of the energy teleported: large extraction requires large consumption of ground-state entanglement. The 2010 result “Ground-State Entanglement Gives Birth to Quantum Energy Teleportation” makes the dependence structural — break the correlation by measuring, and the energy becomes unrecoverable at Bob's site. This ties QET to the same accounting that governs every LOCC protocol: the pre-shared quantum correlation is a finite budget.

Frontier The decisive change of status came in 2023, when the protocol left the blackboard: Kazuki Ikeda demonstrated QET on IBM superconducting quantum hardware, and the results were consistent with the exact solution of the theory. The paper — Demonstration of Quantum Energy Teleportation on Superconducting Quantum Hardware, published in Physical Review Applied 20, 024051 on 21 August 2023 — ran the minimal two-qubit model on several IBM machines (ibmq_lima, ibmq_jakarta, ibmq_hanoi, ibm_cairo, ibm_auckland, ibmq_montreal) and observed the negative interaction energy that is QET's signature.

Frontier The measured agreement is good but not tight, and the honest figure is a hardware-limited three-quarters. The best two-qubit run reported an interaction energy of −0.1079 (at h = 1.5, k = 1 on ibmq_jakarta), about 76% of the exact analytic value, with measurement-error mitigation supplying much of the improvement; the paper notes that negative interaction energy was observed “for all parameter (k, h) combinations in all quantum computers used.” The signature is robust; the precision is set by the noise of 2023-era transmons, not by the protocol.

Established The demonstration explicitly funds Bob's energy from the apparatus, not from nothing. Ikeda states that “energy E_A from the device making the measurement is injected into the entire system” and that “the increase in energy is supplied by the experimental devices.” The experiment is a confirmation of the conservation-respecting picture, not a challenge to it: the machine pays E_A at Alice's qubit; Bob recovers a smaller E_B; the books balance.

Frontier The 2024 three-qubit extension raised the extracted fraction and the fidelity together. Hassan, Shubha and Mahdy's three-qubit protocol reported a single-input-multiple-output variant reaching 67.5% efficiency against the interaction energy, compared with about 35.4% for the two-qubit case, and hit 91% agreement with the analytic value (interaction energy −0.198 at h = 1, k = 4 on ibm_sherbrooke) on IBM's 127-qubit machines. More qubits between Alice and Bob buy a larger and cleaner activation, still inside E_A ≥ E_B.

Frontier The demonstrations are real, and their limits are geometric. Every hardware realisation to date runs on qubits a few hundred micrometres apart on a single die, in one dilution refrigerator, with the “classical channel” implemented as ordinary on-chip control logic and the energies read out as Pauli expectation values rather than measured calorimetrically. Nothing about this is illegitimate — it is how near-term quantum experiments work — but it means the energy ledger has never been closed with the sender and receiver physically separated and each independently metered, which is the gap section 7 is built around.

Established The connection to negative energy density and the quantum energy inequalities is not decorative; it is the same physics. The negative energy density Bob creates is precisely the object bounded by the Ford-Roman quantum inequalities treated in Vacuum Energy Engineering: it can be made locally, it is bounded in magnitude and duration, and it cannot be accumulated. QET is the cleanest tabletop instance of controllable negative energy density, which is a large part of why field theorists rather than energy engineers own the subject.

Frontier Recent work has widened the protocol without touching the ledger. A 2024 result in Quantum by Wang and Yao showed that quantum energy teleportation and quantum information teleportation are “mutually competitive,” bounded together by a shared entanglement resource; a 2025 timelike-QET proposal reported a thirteen-fold efficiency gain (roughly 3% to 40% in an Ising demonstration) by exploiting temporal as well as spatial correlations; and a 2025-2026 line applies QET to quantum key distribution, encoding a key bit in the sign of Bob's energy change. None of these claims net energy; all inherit E_A ≥ E_B.

4 · Frontier questions

Frontier The live questions in QET are about scaling, geometry and thermodynamic bookkeeping, not about whether the effect exists. The 2023 and 2024 demonstrations settled existence; what remains open is how the protocol behaves as it is pushed toward real separation, real measurement costs and continuous fields.

Frontier How far can Bob be from Alice before the teleported energy vanishes into the noise? In critical spin chains Hotta's analysis gives an output energy that falls as a steep power of the site separation — roughly the inverse ninth-half power in the critical Ising model — so the activated energy is a strongly decaying function of distance. Whether a favourable many-body ground state or an engineered coupling graph can flatten that fall-off is an open and testable question.

Speculative Can QET be run between genuinely separated quantum nodes rather than neighbouring qubits on one chip? Every demonstration so far shares a single cryostat and control system. Distributing an entangled ground state across two physically separated superconducting modules, then running QET over a real classical link, would be the first test in which “teleportation” describes the spatial arrangement and not only the mathematics. No such experiment has been reported.

Frontier What is the true cost of Alice's measurement once measurement thermodynamics is taken seriously? The 2025 analysis by Latune and Elouard shows that the minimal work to perform a quantum measurement is the induced energy change plus information-theoretic terms set by the measurement's efficiency and completeness, with a further cost for doing it in finite time. E_A as written in the QET literature is the energy delivered to the field; the full thermodynamic cost of obtaining Alice's outcome is larger, and it has never been folded into a QET energy balance on hardware.

Speculative Does QET survive the passage from qubits to continuous quantum fields in the laboratory? Hotta's original constructions live in quantum field theory, and Martin-Martinez and collaborators frame QET on a field vacuum as a way to create “exotic distributions of stress-energy density in a quantum field theory.” An analogue-gravity or quantum-optical field realisation, as opposed to a few discrete qubits, is proposed but unrealised.

Frontier Is the extractable quantity better described as energy or as ergotropy? A 2026 proposal teleports ergotropy — the maximum work extractable by unitary operations — via surface-code error correction, arguing that bare internal energy “may not be convertible to work.” Which quantity is the operationally meaningful deliverable of QET, and whether the distinction changes the ledger, is an active and unsettled framing question.

Speculative Can the sign-of-energy readout be made a practical cryptographic primitive? The quantum-key-distribution-by-QET line encodes a raw key bit in whether Bob's local energy change is negative or positive. Whether this offers any security or efficiency advantage over established QKD, given that it still requires distributed entanglement and a classical channel, is claimed but not demonstrated.

Handwave Could QET ever be repeated fast enough to matter as a transport mechanism? Because each round consumes ground-state entanglement and requires a fresh measurement paying fresh E_A, sustained operation is a sequence of net-negative transactions from the operator's point of view. Any framing of QET as continuous energy delivery is a step that works by assertion; the recharge cost is the whole objection.

5 · Technological bottlenecks

Established The first bottleneck is definitional and fatal to the energy-technology reading: QET is not a source, and no engineering can make E_B exceed E_A. This is not a materials problem or a temperature problem; it is a theorem. Every downstream difficulty below is therefore a difficulty for QET-as-instrument, because QET-as-generator is already closed by section 3.

Frontier The extracted energies are minuscule. Bob's yield in the demonstrated models is a fraction of a natural energy unit set by the qubit Hamiltonian — for superconducting transmons, that unit is a single microwave quantum, of order 10−24 joules. Even at 100% of the interaction energy, a QET round moves less energy than a single infrared photon, and the useful signal is the sign and the ratio, not a quantity anyone would harvest.

Established The energies are inferred, not weighed. Hardware QET reads E_A and E_B as reconstructed expectation values of the Hamiltonian's terms, averaged over many shots with error mitigation. There is no per-node calorimeter confirming that E_A joules entered Alice's qubit and E_B joules left Bob's; the ledger is a statistical reconstruction on a shared chip, not a measured heat balance, which is the precise sense in which the accounting is still open.

Frontier Distance is a steep tax. The power-law fall-off of teleported energy with separation means that pushing Alice and Bob apart, which is the whole point of teleportation, collapses the very quantity being teleported. A real-separation demonstration must fight a signal that shrinks faster than the noise floor improves.

Frontier Entanglement distribution is the hidden cost. QET presupposes a shared entangled ground state. Preparing and maintaining that state across separated nodes is itself an energetic and technical burden — the same distributed-entanglement problem that Quantum Networks exists to solve — and any complete accounting must charge it to the protocol.

Speculative The classical channel is not free either. Transmitting Alice's outcome and eventually erasing it carries a Landauer cost of at least kT ln 2 per bit at temperature T, the subject of Thermodynamics of Computation. At the millikelvin temperatures of a dilution refrigerator this is small, but it is nonzero and is never counted in the published E_A ≥ E_B balance, and at any realistic ambient temperature it can dominate.

Established Storage is not part of the protocol. The negative-energy region Bob creates is transient; QET activates energy, it does not warehouse it. Framing QET as a battery conflates it with the separate and harder problem treated in Energy Storage Revolutions.

Frontier Non-accumulation closes the loophole a persistent operator would reach for. As with the negative-energy pulses of vacuum engineering, the negative energy Bob draws is repaid; you cannot run the protocol repeatedly and bank the withdrawals, because each round starts from a re-prepared ground state that Alice must pay to disturb again.

6 · Research dependencies

Frontier QET's progress is gated by capabilities being built for other reasons, which is a strength: it needs no new physics, only better instruments. Its dependencies are metrology, entanglement distribution and control, and each is advancing under its own programme.

Frontier It depends on node-resolved energy metrology. Closing the ledger requires measuring the energy entering Alice and leaving Bob directly, which means single-microwave-photon calorimetry at the qubit — a capability under active development in quantum thermodynamics laboratories but not yet integrated with a QET experiment. This is the tightest dependency and the one section 7 turns on.

Established It depends on high-fidelity ground-state preparation. The whole protocol starts from the joint ground state of a coupled Hamiltonian; preparation errors show up directly as a corrupted E_A / E_B ratio. The 2023-2024 improvements came largely from measurement-error mitigation, dynamical decoupling and Pauli twirling — borrowed wholesale from the Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing toolkit.

Frontier It depends on distributed entanglement. A spatially meaningful QET needs an entangled state shared between separated modules, the core deliverable of quantum networking. Until deterministic module-to-module entanglement is routine, QET stays on single chips.

Frontier It depends on the thermodynamics of measurement being pinned down quantitatively. The Latune-Elouard accounting supplies the missing cost term; a QET balance that ignores it is incomplete. Progress on measurement thermodynamics is a precondition for any claim that a QET round is genuinely conservation-respecting once every cost is counted.

Speculative It does not depend on quantum gravity, cosmology, or any unproven physics. Unlike the exotic-geometry consumers of negative energy density, QET is ordinary quantum mechanics and quantum field theory in flat space; the dependency graph points down at instruments, not up at unsolved theory.

7 · Required experiments

Frontier This brief has a genuinely useful experiments section, because the constraint that matters is testable with apparatus that already exists in separate laboratories — it has simply never been assembled into one experiment. The demonstrations to date prove the effect; the experiment that would change this brief's assessment proves the accounting.

Frontier The decisive experiment is to close the full energy ledger — the energy injected by Alice's measurement, plus the thermodynamic cost of transmitting and erasing her classical bit, set against the work Bob extracts — on two superconducting nodes that are physically separated and each fitted with its own calorimeter. Speculative A result showing E_A plus the channel cost is greater than or equal to Bob's measured work, with no hidden reservoir and the qubits demonstrably apart, would convert QET from a chip-scale expectation-value reconstruction into a directly weighed, conservation-respecting demonstration. Nobody has scheduled it, and the reason is integration difficulty rather than any missing principle.

Established The components exist. Single-microwave-photon nanocalorimeters have been demonstrated in quantum-thermodynamics laboratories; superconducting qubits are mature; module-to-module entanglement is advancing in Quantum Networks; and the measurement-cost accounting is now available from the 2025 thermodynamics-of-measurement literature. Frontier The experiment is an integration problem, not a discovery problem, which is exactly why its absence is notable.

Frontier Second, push QET across a real classical link between separated cryostats. Speculative Demonstrating that Bob's energy is activated only after Alice's message physically arrives, with the timing resolved, would directly confirm the no-faster-than-light and no-energy-in-transit claims that are currently supported by theory and by the on-chip geometry rather than by a spatial measurement. This is the experiment that would make the word “teleportation” describe the apparatus.

Frontier Third, measure the distance fall-off directly. Speculative Mapping E_B against Alice-Bob separation in an engineered many-body ground state, and testing whether a chosen coupling graph can beat the critical-chain power law, would settle how far QET can reach before the activated energy drowns in noise. The prediction is a steep decay; a measured departure from it would be a real finding about many-body ground states.

Frontier Fourth, fold the measurement's full thermodynamic cost into a hardware balance. Speculative Running QET while independently accounting the work of Alice's measurement per the efficiency-and-completeness terms, not merely the energy delivered to the field, would test whether the demonstrated E_A ≥ E_B survives once the true cost of obtaining the outcome is charged. The expectation is that it survives with room to spare; confirming it removes the last place a free-energy reading could hide.

Speculative Fifth, realise QET in a continuous quantum field rather than discrete qubits. Frontier An analogue-gravity or quantum-optical field platform exhibiting a teleported activation of ground-state energy, with the negative energy density resolved, would connect the tabletop protocol to the field-theoretic constructions it came from. No such realisation has been reported, and it is the natural bridge to the stress-energy-engineering framing.

Handwave No experiment is required, or possible, to test the free-energy reading, because it is excluded by theorem rather than by data. The passivity of the ground state and the non-negativity of total energy are not empirical questions a QET rig could reopen; an experiment claiming net extraction would be an error in the apparatus, and the useful experiments above all assume conservation and test the bookkeeping.

8 · Engineering requirements

Frontier The engineering requirements for QET-as-instrument are demanding but conventional; the requirements for QET-as-power-source do not exist, because that device is ruled out. Everything below is in service of a cleaner measurement, not a larger yield.

Established Millikelvin operation and low-noise control are baseline. The energies in play are single-microwave-quantum scale, so the apparatus must run in a dilution refrigerator with the same isolation, filtering and shielding that Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing demands; thermal noise at the qubit frequency would swamp E_B.

Frontier Per-node calorimetry is the enabling instrument. A QET node that can be weighed rather than inferred needs a calorimeter capable of resolving the absorption or emission of individual microwave photons and integrating it with a working qubit — the precision-measurement frontier shared with Precision Quantum Sensing. This is the single piece of hardware that separates today's demonstrations from the decisive experiment.

Frontier A real classical channel with resolved latency is needed to make separation meaningful. Bob's operation must be gated on the physical arrival of Alice's bit, with the propagation time long enough to resolve against the protocol's own timescale, so that the no-energy-in-transit claim is demonstrated rather than assumed.

Frontier Deterministic entanglement between separated modules is a hard prerequisite. The shared ground state must span the gap; building and stabilising it across two cryostats is the same microwave-photonic-link engineering that Quantum Networks is pursuing, and it is not yet routine.

Established Error mitigation is load-bearing. The published fidelity gains came from measurement-error mitigation, dynamical decoupling and Pauli twirling; without them the interaction-energy signal is buried. Any serious QET rig inherits the full mitigation stack as standard equipment.

Handwave No thermal-management, transmission or storage engineering is required, because there is nothing to manage, transmit or store at useful scale. Treating QET as a candidate for grid-adjacent hardware — heat sinks, converters, distribution — is engineering for a device the physics does not permit; the engineering that matters is metrological.

9 · Adjacent technologies

Frontier QET sits at the junction of quantum information, quantum thermodynamics and quantum field theory, and its most productive adjacencies are the ones that treat it as a probe.

Frontier Quantum batteries are the closest sibling. Both concern work stored in and extracted from quantum systems; QET differs in that its energy is activated across a correlated pair by LOCC rather than charged into one system by a unitary. The 2026 ergotropy-teleportation proposal explicitly bridges the two, teleporting the maximum extractable work of a quantum battery over a surface code.

Frontier Vacuum energy engineering shares the physical object. QET's negative energy density is bounded by the same quantum energy inequalities that dominate Vacuum Energy Engineering, and QET is arguably the most controllable laboratory instance of engineered negative energy density — a point of leverage for anyone testing those inequalities.

Frontier Measurement thermodynamics is the accounting partner. QET is a clean testbed for the thermodynamic cost of measurement and for measurement-powered engines, and the tools of Thermodynamics of Computation supply the missing cost terms in its ledger.

Speculative Quantum key distribution is a proposed application. Encoding a key bit in the sign of Bob's energy change turns QET into a cryptographic primitive; whether it competes with established QKD is unsettled, and it depends on the same entanglement and classical-channel infrastructure.

Speculative Relativistic quantum information and analogue gravity are the field-theory adjacencies. QET on a field vacuum is a route to engineered stress-energy distributions, connecting it to laboratory tests of how quantum fields source curvature — the spacetime-engineering framing raised at Perimeter Institute.

10 · Institutional requirements

Frontier QET is unusually well served by its institutions precisely because it is a physics result rather than an energy programme, and the risk is entirely on the communication side.

Established The work lives in mainstream venues. The demonstration appeared in Physical Review Applied; the theory and its extensions appear in Physics Letters A, Quantum, and the Canadian Journal of Physics; and the code is openly posted for reproduction. This is a subject with normal peer review, open data and independent replication, not a fringe enclave.

Frontier Reproducibility is built in. Ikeda's circuits run on public IBM hardware and on free simulators; any group can rerun the two-qubit protocol without special apparatus. That lowers the barrier to the honest, incremental experiments this brief calls for and raises the barrier to unfalsifiable claims.

Frontier The decisive experiment falls between institutional stools. Closing the calorimetric ledger needs a quantum-thermodynamics metrology group and a superconducting-qubit group and a quantum-networking capability in one collaboration; no single lab owns all three, and no funding line is addressed to the integration. That, rather than cost, is why the experiment is unscheduled.

Speculative The main institutional hazard is science communication. The subject's own headline literature — “pull energy out of nothing” — invites exactly the misreading the physics forbids, and a standards-of-description norm, in which every QET result states the E_A ≥ E_B ledger up front, would do more for the field's credibility than any single experiment.

11 · Ethical & societal considerations

Frontier The ethical surface of QET is small and almost entirely about honesty, not harm. There is no dual-use weapon, no environmental footprint at scale, and no subject population; the risks are epistemic.

Handwave The primary harm is fraud enablement. Any technology described as extracting energy from the vacuum is catnip for free-energy scams and for the misallocation of research capital toward perpetual-motion adjacent ventures. A protocol that genuinely creates negative energy density, honestly bounded, is more dangerous to public understanding than an obviously impossible claim, because it is real enough to cite.

Frontier The corrective is the flag itself. Stating in every public description that the sender's measurement always injects more energy than the receiver extracts is not a caveat but the result; the ethical obligation here is to lead with the ledger.

Speculative There is a mild opportunity cost risk. Attention and funding drawn by the “energy” framing could crowd out the genuinely valuable instrument-and-metrology programme, in which QET tests entanglement, negative energy density and measurement thermodynamics. The ethical use of the subject is to fund the questions it can actually answer.

Frontier The cryptographic application carries ordinary QKD ethics. If QET-based key distribution ever proves practical, it inherits the standard dual-use questions of secure communication — no more, no less — and nothing peculiar to QET.

12 · Civilizational implications

Frontier The civilizational implication of QET is a correction, not a capability: it teaches, with a working demonstration, that the vacuum is not a fuel tank while showing that ground-state correlations are nonetheless a manipulable physical resource.

Established It changes nothing about energy supply. No plausible development path leads from QET to power generation, transmission or storage, because the governing inequality forbids it; a civilization's energy problem is untouched by this result, and any roadmap that lists QET as an energy technology is mis-specified.

Frontier Its real contribution is to the physics of information and energy. QET is a load-bearing demonstration that information — a classical message plus a pre-shared correlation — can license the local activation of energy, a fact that sharpens the deep link between thermodynamics and information that runs through Thermodynamics of Computation.

Speculative If the field-theoretic version matures, the payoff is understanding, not power. A controllable handle on negative energy density and engineered stress-energy would be a genuine tool for probing the interface of quantum fields and gravity — the kind of long-horizon scientific capability whose value is measured in settled questions, not watts.

Frontier The most durable civilizational lesson is methodological. QET is a clean case study in how a result that sounds like magic (“energy from nothing”) turns out, on inspection, to be a strict conservation-respecting redistribution — a template for reading every future claim in this genre, and a reason to keep the flag discipline this site is built on.

13 · Timelines

These horizons track a settled effect, an open bookkeeping question, and the instruments that would close it — not an energy programme, because there is nothing here to power.

  • 10 yr: Frontier Expect the decisive experiment — a closed calorimetric energy ledger on physically separated, individually metered nodes — to become feasible as single-microwave-photon calorimetry and module-to-module entanglement mature, and expect it to confirm E_A ≥ E_B directly. Frontier Expect continued fidelity gains on the two- and three-qubit protocols and steady work on distance fall-off. Handwave Expect no net energy extraction and no device, because none is permitted.
  • 25 yr: Speculative If a continuous-field realisation on an analogue-gravity or quantum-optical platform is achieved, QET becomes a standard probe of negative energy density and the quantum energy inequalities discussed in Vacuum Energy Engineering. Speculative A plausible alternative is that QET is absorbed into quantum thermodynamics and quantum networking as a technique rather than a named field. Handwave Anyone forecasting QET power hardware at this horizon is forecasting a violation of ground-state passivity.
  • 50 yr: Speculative Contingent on whether relativistic quantum information delivers laboratory stress-energy engineering, in which case QET is remembered as the first controllable source of engineered negative energy density. Frontier If it does not, QET remains a settled and instructive corner of quantum information with a mature metrology around it.
  • 100 / 250+ yr: Handwave Beyond useful forecasting; the defensible statement is that the E_A ≥ E_B ledger is a theorem about passivity and non-negativity of energy, the kind of result that survives, and that a phenomenon which costs the sender more than it yields the receiver will never be an energy source however long one waits.

14 · Technology tree & dependencies

  • Depends on the negative-energy-density physics owned by Vacuum Energy Engineering, which supplies the quantum energy inequalities that bound Bob's activated region, and on the measurement-cost accounting in Thermodynamics of Computation. No brief on this map blocks QET's existence — it has already been demonstrated — but closing its ledger waits on capabilities named below.
  • Requires (not on this map) first, a closed energy ledger measured on sender and receiver qubits that are physically separated and each independently calorimetered, which no experiment has yet produced; second, single-microwave-photon calorimetry integrated at a working qubit node, the enabling instrument that today's expectation-value reconstructions replace; third, deterministic sharing of a coupled ground state across two separated cryostats, the distributed-entanglement capability QET presupposes; and fourth, an agreed metrology standard for node-resolved quantum work accounting, so that E_A, the channel cost and Bob's work are counted in one auditable balance.
  • Enables a directly-weighed test of ground-state passivity and of the energy-entanglement relation; a controllable laboratory source of bounded negative energy density; and, if the cryptographic line succeeds, a QET-based key-distribution primitive. None of these is an energy source, and no enabling edge to a power technology is claimed, because the governing inequality forbids one.
  • Adjacent Quantum Networks for the distributed entanglement and classical channel, Precision Quantum Sensing for the calorimetry, Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing for the qubit hardware and error mitigation, Energy Storage Revolutions for the storage problem QET is often confused with, and Vacuum Energy Engineering for the shared negative-energy physics.

15 · Common misconceptions & speculative claims

Handwave Claim: quantum energy teleportation extracts free energy from the vacuum. It does not, and its own theory is the refutation. The ground state is passive; a local operation on the vacuum raises its energy, and the total energy is bounded below by the vacuum, so there is nothing to extract globally. QET activates energy that Alice has already paid to make available; the vacuum is not a source in it.

Handwave Claim: QET teleports energy faster than light. It does not. Bob can do nothing until Alice's classical message arrives, and that message is limited by the speed of light; the energy Bob then extracts was already local to him. Established As Hotta puts it, “the speed of this classical communication between them never exceeds the speed of light and, therefore, causality is strictly retained.”

Handwave Claim: energy is transported from Alice to Bob. No energy propagates between them; the intermediate system is never excited in transit. What travels is a classical bit; what is consumed is shared entanglement; what Bob gains was in his own field. “Teleportation” names this pattern, as it does for quantum states, and misleads only if read as a beam.

Established Claim: the receiver can get more energy than the sender spends. Never. E_A ≥ E_B is a theorem, confirmed on every hardware run; Ikeda states the increase in energy “is supplied by the experimental devices.” There is no regime, model or apparatus in which the inequality reverses.

Frontier Claim: the popular framing “pull energy out of nothing” is accurate. It is a headline, and the article beneath it says otherwise: “the energy wasn't free; it had to be unlocked using knowledge purchased with energy in a far-off location,” and “Bob can't extract more energy than Alice put in, so energy is conserved.” The framing sells the effect and buries the ledger.

Handwave Claim: QET is a battery or storage technology. It is not; the negative-energy region is transient and QET has no storage step. Storage is a separate and harder problem, and conflating the two is a category error.

Handwave Claim: QET can be repeated to accumulate a useful amount of energy. It cannot be accumulated for gain; each round requires a re-prepared ground state that Alice must pay to disturb, so a sequence of rounds is a sequence of net-negative transactions for the operator, exactly as quantum interest forbids banking negative-energy pulses in vacuum engineering.

Established Claim: the effect is unproven or merely theoretical. False since 2023: it has been run on IBM superconducting hardware and reproduced independently in a three-qubit extension in 2024, with results consistent with the exact theory. The open question is not existence but the closed calorimetric ledger.

Frontier Claim: the hardware demonstrations have weighed the energy going in and out. They have not; they reconstruct energies as Pauli expectation values on a shared chip, which is why this brief treats the directly-calorimetered, spatially-separated ledger as the decisive test rather than a formality.

Speculative Claim: QET is a stepping stone to warp drives or wormholes. Only in the narrow sense that it makes bounded negative energy density in the lab; the quantum energy inequalities and the quantum interest conjecture treated in Vacuum Energy Engineering stand between that and any exotic geometry, and QET does nothing to relax them.
