1 · Concept overview

Electrogravitics is the claimed coupling of strong electric fields to gravity — the idea that a charged high-voltage device (classically an asymmetric capacitor) can produce thrust or reduce its own weight, i.e. antigravity. It is associated with Thomas Townsend Brown and the “Biefeld–Brown effect” of the 1920s–60s, and a long tail of fringe and conspiracy literature.

2 · Current scientific position

Established The observed effect is real but mundane: a high-voltage asymmetric capacitor in air produces thrust by electrohydrodynamics (ion wind) — a corona discharge ionises air, and the ions, accelerated by the field, drag neutral air along, producing a reaction force. Handwave It is not gravitic: in a vacuum, with no air to push against, the effect essentially disappears.

Frontier The underlying ion-wind physics is a legitimate, active propulsion area — MIT flew the first heavier-than-air aircraft with no moving parts using electroaerodynamic thrust in 2018 — but that is atmospheric propulsion, explicitly not gravity manipulation. Handwave “Electrogravitics” as antigravity, and the associated claims about secret aircraft, is pseudoscience with no supporting evidence (see Gravity Modification).

3 · Frontier questions

Frontier On the real side: improving the thrust density and efficiency of electroaerodynamic propulsion for niche atmospheric craft. Handwave On the antigravity side: there is no effect to develop.

4 · Technological bottlenecks

Handwave No electric–gravity coupling exists. Frontier For real ion-wind propulsion, thrust-to-power ratio and thrust density are low.

5 · Research dependencies

Real electroaerodynamics depends on high-voltage power electronics and atmospheric physics. The antigravity claim depends on a gravity coupling that does not exist.

6 · Required experiments

Established Lifter / ion-wind demonstrations in air — and their disappearance in vacuum — and the 2018 MIT electroaerodynamic flight. Handwave No vacuum “electrogravitic” thrust has ever been demonstrated.

7 · Engineering requirements

Frontier Real electroaerodynamic propulsion is an engineering problem for niche atmospheric use. Handwave Electrogravitic antigravity has nothing to engineer.

8 · Adjacent technologies

Gravity modification, reactionless propulsion, and electrodynamic / ion propulsion.

Legitimate electroaerodynamics research lives in aerospace labs; electrogravitics-as-antigravity lives in fringe and conspiracy literature — a standing caution.

Epistemic: electrogravitics is a durable magnet for pseudoscience and conspiracy claims (the recurring “the B-2 uses electrogravitics” myth).

Frontier Electroaerodynamic propulsion may find niche quiet atmospheric uses. Handwave Electrogravitic antigravity would be revolutionary — but it is not real.

14 · Common misconceptions & speculative claims

Established The Biefeld–Brown effect is ion wind, not antigravity — it needs air and dies in vacuum. Handwave No aircraft (the B-2 or otherwise) uses electrogravitic propulsion. Frontier The real physics (electroaerodynamics) is legitimate, but it is atmospheric and has nothing to do with gravity.
