The protomolecule is not alive in any ordinary sense, yet it copies itself, spreads, and rewrites the matter it touches. Before that sounds like magic, it is worth seeing how much of it already exists. Two real classes of non-living thing — viruses and prions — do exactly the parts fiction stitches together.
Viruses: replication without being alive
Established A virus is not a cell and by most working definitions is not alive. It is a genome — DNA or RNA — wrapped in a protein coat, with no metabolism of its own. What it has is a set of instructions and a key that fits a host. On contact it injects its genome, and the host's own machinery is turned to manufacturing copies. The virus contributes information; the cell contributes the factory.
Established That division is the important lesson for reading the protomolecule. Replication does not require the replicator to be a self-contained living organism. It requires a copyable description and an environment that can be co-opted into building from it. A virus is the minimal existing demonstration that “not alive” and “self-copying” are entirely compatible.
Prions: propagating a shape, not a sequence
Established Prions are stranger and, for this curriculum, more important. A prion is a protein that has folded into the wrong shape, and whose wrong shape is contagious: on contact with a normally-folded copy of the same protein, it induces that copy to misfold the same way. No genome is transmitted. The thing that propagates is a conformation — a shape.
Established This matters because Layer 1 established that in molecular biology, shape is function. A prion is therefore a proof of principle that you can spread a functional state through matter without copying any sequence at all, simply by contact-templating. Scale that idea up and give it direction and you have most of the conceptual machinery the protomolecule appears to use.
What the real examples do not give you
Frontier Real viruses and prions are narrow. A virus can only hijack hosts it has keys for; a prion propagates one specific misfold of one specific protein and does nothing else. Neither carries a construction program, coordinates across distances, or pursues an outcome. They are single-purpose replicators, not general-purpose engineers.
Handwave The protomolecule keeps the mechanism (non-living, shape-propagating, host-co-opting) but drops every limit: it converts arbitrary biomass, executes a staged plan, and behaves as if aiming at a goal. The mechanism is borrowed from real biology; the open-endedness is supplied by the story. Keeping those apart is the whole point of flagging them.
The protomolecule connection
The protomolecule's basic verb — touch matter, rewrite it into more of itself — is the prion trick (contagious shape) fused with the viral trick (co-opt the host's machinery). Both halves are real. The fusion, at asteroid scale and under apparent direction, is not.
